  Paul Kane Summary
Kane returned to Toronto for the winter, elaborating his field sketches to oil canvases, and in spring of the next year, he went to the headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company at Lachine (today part of Montreal) and asked company governor George Simpson for support for his travel plans.
Kane's 1848 exhibition of his sketches, which included 155 watercolour and 85 oil on paper paintings, helped establish the genre in the minds of the public and cleared the way for artists like William Cresswell or Daniel Fowler, who both were able to make a living from their watercolour paintings.
Kane's birthplace is proven by a prayer book from Mallow that was in possession of the family and that originally had been presented to a sister of Paul Kane in 1816.

Paul Kane was a kind of precursor to the modern documentary maker; his artwork and writings are a record of life on the harsh Canadian frontier in the mid 19th century.
But Kane was anxious to take the sketches into his studio, where he could do large oil paintings on canvas, much like the one that sold Monday night.
Once in his studio, Kane created the main paradox of his life and work: his paintings were often highly embellished versions of his sketches.
