'Creative Attacks' Beat Crypto -- Expert
Kocher adds that Moore's Law is not making security experts exponentially more intelligent to compensate for the increased risk of attack.
Kocher says some of the most common successful attacks against commercial products include buffer overflows, "alg negotiation," flawed random number generators, timing attacks or exploits against the "bignum" programming libraries that allow computers to work with very large numbers.
Kocher says his company examines components to see if they are extraneous, and evaluates implementation details to determine how many similar systems have failed.

Code Breaker Cracks Smart Cards' Digital Safe
Paul Kocher of Cryptography Research holds a modified "smart card" reader he developed to help decipher the digital code of the cards that are used by banks and financial institutions.
Kocher and his colleagues were able to crack the digital code designed to make the smart cards tamper proof by drawing mathematical inferences from the fluctuating electrical power consumption of the chip.
Kocher said he had approached the smart-card industry last year with the details of his discovery because he knew that criminals might also use the same tricks.

Star cryptographer Paul Kocher's business strategy is simple: Search out industries that are losing money because of security holes and then find ways to plug them.
Kocher's approach to taming piracy, however, is vastly different -- and less privacy-invasive -- than the proposed solutions from technology giants such as Microsoft (MSFT) or the legislative solutions being sought on Capitol Hill.
Kocher stresses that it isn't necessary to trade privacy for security: "The people that attack credit-card networks, that commit piracy, that commit identity theft -- it's the same people.

But Paul Kocher actually does it well -- while his essays are a bit outdated, "Master of Middle-Earth : The Fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien" still stand as some of the best interpretations of Tolkien's work.
Kocher's essays are somewhat out of date, since they were written in the 1970s, long before the "Unfinished Tales" book was published, and it only dips into the "Silmarillion." But at the same time, his essays are thoughtful and in tune with Tolkien's trilogy, and stick closely to Tolkien's Christian beliefs and his mythic influences.

 Project descriptions
In December 1995, Paul C. Kocher, a 22-year old independent cryptography consultant from Stanford, CA, released a draft version of his paper warning vendors and users of two most widespread public key cryptoalgorithms, RSA and DSS, about the attack he devised.
Paul is working on a complete implementation of his idea, but he already presented his preliminary results at the RSA Data Security and CRYPTO conferences in 1996.
Additional tasks could be to analyze possible countermeasures, and find the dependence between the difficulty of the attack and the algorithm for modular multiplication used in the implementation of the cryptoalgorithm.

Las Vegas, Nev. -- Security expert Paul Kocher warned at the National Association of Broadcasters meeting here that the next generation optical media formats that the entertainment and content industry is hoping will eliminate piracy may only be a temporary solution.
Movie piracy today is still immature in the United States, but as available storage space and bandwidth increase, so will the motivation and sophistication of movie pirates, said Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist of Cryptography Research, Inc.
On the other hand, said Kocher, if security decisions reflect a disciplined analysis of the long-term business requirements, I still think it is possible to keep piracy at a manageable level.

Techdirt:Putting A Trace On Copyrighted Booty
Businessweek is running an interview with Paul Kocher of Cryptography Research about the work he's doing to offer the entertainment industry a way to track down pirates, without violating anyone's privacy.
His plan is to put some code into the content itself that identifies where it was created, so that if someone is caught infringing then the material can be traced back to where it originated from.
Without knowing many of the details (and the article doesn't provide too many), I can think of plenty of ways that this could be defeated or lead to even greater scams, where people try to pin the blame for distributed content on other, innocent, victims.

Expert: Simplicity is key to keeping code secure   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
That was the advice passed down by security expert Paul Kocher, president of Cryptography Research Inc., who told the Usenix Security Symposium that more powerful computer systems and increasingly complex code will be a growing cause of insecure networks.
Huge chunks of software such as Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating systems that have myriad features built in to take advantage of fast processors will perpetually have more flaws than security experts are able to uncover, he said.
Every time the number of lines of code is doubled, a company adds four times as many security problems, Kocher said, which makes this trend of bigger, more feature-rich applications daunting to security experts.

NIST says DES encryption 'inadequate' | InfoWorld | News | 2004-07-29 | By Paul Roberts, IDG News Service
In an 1998 experiment funded by the nonprofit civil liberties group the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Kocher and his colleagues designed a machine for about $250,000 that could break one DES key a week, he said.
While the loss of FIPS certification has not yet been approved, software vendors with legacy products will likely be scrambling to update their products to work with the stronger encryption.
That could be good news for the security community, which was worried about loosely protected data, and for the companies, which may be able to charge the government for software upgrades to their products, Kocher said.
