Paul Preuss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paul Preuss (born March 7, 1942 in Albany, Georgia) is a U.S. writer of science fiction, science articles and also a science consultant for film companies.
He is perhaps best known for Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime series which, although written by Preuss, are novels woven around incidents, characters and places from Arthur C. Clarke's short stories.
The Core is a movie very loosely inspired by his novel Core.

In Secret Passages Paul Preuss aims even higher, attempting to combine many different aspects simultaneously, and while he does not succeed equally well at all of them, he comes close enough to the mark for the novel to be quite successful overall.
And Preuss further illustrates the advantage of aiming higher, since a reasonably successful percentage of an exponential payoff can be substantially higher than a totally-successful simple novel with a lower payoff potential.
Preuss is quite capable of handling Minakis' emotional development, with his various influences and rites of passage, blending them well enough to portray a well-rounded and sympathetic scientist.

Preuss focuses on a detailed assessment of Israel's responses to God's acts of election and covenant with them as a people.
Preuss presents a comprehensive analysis of the theology of the Old Testament.
Utilizing the most recent scholarship available, Preuss proposes that the central and unifying theme of Old Testament theology is God's act of election and covenant and the subsequent human responses to God.

Scifilm -- Reviews, THE VOID (2001)
Maybe it would, but certainly not this movie; the notion of an artificial fl hole is a fascinating one which has been used well by science fiction writers, but once THE VOID introduces this intriguing idea, it's all downhill, and we plummet straight into an abyss of cliches.
How dense must Paul's character be if he can't immediately understand the purpose of the project he has been assigned to do, and needs to have Tapping lecture to him about the physics involved—when, as an engineer, he should know all of this beforehand?
Amanda Tapping is miscast as the heroine; this character should have been played as being more vengeance-driven and devious (after all, she sleeps with Paul's character just so she can steal information from him), with someone such as Linda Fiorentino or Lara Flynn Boyle in the lead.

Now on his third career (not counting the requisite youthful longshoring, taxi-driving, hitchhiking to Alaska, bumming around Europe, etc.) Paul Preuss is a science writer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA.
Before he went to work for a living, Preuss was a full-time writer of fiction, science articles, and criticism; before that, he spent many years in documentary film and TV.
After the war things slowed down a bit; he grew up mostly in Albuquerque, NM and the neighborhood of Washington, DC, with one memorable year (oh to be 16 again) in Hawaii.

In trying to connect Science Fiction and the Crime novel, Paul Preuss, who is capable of good writing at times but very often leaves the reader thinking, "could do better", has really provided a chapter of a much longer work.
The back-story to the novel sequence is Sparta trying to discover her true identity (which places us firmly in Quest Fantasy space), but over six novels the interest may be strained rather than sustained.
Because of the origin in a shorter piece, the pace is a bit uneven; Preuss does not rein in a tendency to over-elaborate, presumably to build the work up to proper novel length.

I don't think Paul Preuss is attemting to take Clark's place in science fiction history.
Preuss' idea has been to basically licence 5 **UNRELATED** short stories (one per book in the Venus Prime series) that were among the great short stories written by A.C. Clarke.
Then, Preuss procedes in dissolving the short story in an otherwise tasteless story which main purpose seems to be to link Clarke's 5 pieces of work.

Preuss uses a plotting style that jumps us from the now to the past to the near past providing us with just enough information, at just the right times to keep us involved and the story moving.
Preuss weaves his story from present day Crete to a Crete during the war to Europe and back, providing a wonderful story of sacrifice and searching.
It's hard at times to figure out just whose story this is. Preuss spends a lot of time focusing on the life of Minakis, and it is, in fact, Minakis life story that provides the impetus for Anne-Marie to come to grips with her own life.
