The Nation, 09/04/1948 - Behind France's Crisis by Vayo, J. Alvarez Del
When Paul Ramadier drove to the Presidential Palace to decline the job of forming a new Cabinet, all hopes for a quick solution faded.
Ramadier currently enjoys the reputation of being France's number-one peace-time resistant; last year, while Premier, he weathered the most violent storms in the Cabinet and the Assembly by his sheer physical endurance, sitting untired through lengthy debates that left his adversaries literally worn out.
But even Ramadier realizes that the present crisis is far more serious than that of last year; after meeting with the Socialist parliamentary group, which seems sharply divided on the question of a program for the next government, he asked President M. Auriol kindly to try elsewhere.

Today many critics call Paul Cézanne the Father of Modern Painting, but during most of his life he seemed to be a failure.
Associated early in his life with the group of French poets called the Parnassians, he later became the leader of the symbolists, a group of writers who sought freedom from the rigid conventions of French poetry.

As leader of the French Communist Party (PCF) 1930–64, Thorez took it into the Popular Front alliance in the 1930s and was one of France's first three communists ministers when he joined General de Gaulle's Provisional Government in November 1945.
In May 1947, faced with a substantial unofficial strike movement, the PCF deputies voted against the government's wage-freeze, and Thorez was dismissed by Paul Ramadier, de Gaulle's successor as prime minister.
With the onset of the Cold War, Thorez led his party through its most Stalinist period, adopting a position of unwavering support for the USSR on all questions until 1956, when he refused to accept Nikita Khrushchev's denunciation of Stalin.
