After 1985 the French GP was permanently at Paul Ricard although that year Elio de Angelis was killed in a testing accident and the track was subsequently shortened dramatically to get rid of the fast sweepers where de Angelis had crashed and to shorten the Mistral straight.
In 1991 the local authorities at Magny-Cours funded the switch of the French GP away from Paul Ricard and the track faded a little from the international scene although it continued to be a major venue for motorcycle racing and for French national racing.
After Paul Ricard's death the Ricard family decided to sell the track and in May 1999 it was bought by Bernie Ecclestone for around $11m.The circuit has since been completely rebuilt and is currently being used only as a test track.

A statement by the circuit read: 'Paul Ricard SA, owner of the circuit, and Ricard SA (Pernod Ricard Group) which manages the circuit, came to the conclusion that, after 30 years of intensive activity, the circuit needed to be rebuilt to meet the standards which be required by the motorsport authorities in the years ahead.'
Paul Ricard is in the South of France, and is characterised by a fearsome kink leading onto one of the longest straights in motor racing.

The arrival of Magny-Cours in 1991 saw the teams leave Paul Ricard although now the circuit has passed into the hands of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone rumours of a return are growing.
During the 1970s and early 80s the circuit had an excellent safety record which was irrevocably tarnished by the death of Elio de Angelis in 1986 during a testing accident.

Kimi completed a total of 84 laps on the circuit, setting a fastest time of 1:11.255.
