The Advocate - 'Reckless' Richards cracks open O's coffers
In seven years with the Orioles, Paul Richards made the largest trade in baseball history, signed Brooks Robinson, invented the oversized catcher's mitt and preached a pitching-and-defense philosophy that defined the Orioles for years after he was gone.
Richards wasted piles of money on prospects who failed to blossom, but he also "opened the keys to the cash box, which had to happen if we were ever going to compete," said Joe Hamper, an accountant who joined the Orioles' front office in 1954 and stayed for 37 years, retiring as chief financial officer.
Richards was a tall Texan who had batted.227 over parts of eight seasons as a backup catcher in the majors.

Richards got home he told his wife what he found and told her that he would take care of it when he got back from Chicago, but then looked in the bag, saw our business cards and remembered seeing our card and thought I need to find these kids now.
Richards kind (understatement of a word) enough to return the camera bag, he was going to be in the same city and even at the same game that we were going to be at with no change of plans.
Richards did for us was not only selfless but, at least for myself, gave me faith that good people are still and always have been out there and that not all men are inherently evil.

Baseball Quotes - The Game (Appreciation, description)
Baseball is the very symbol, the outward and visible expression of the drive and push and rush and struggle of the raging, tearing, booming nineteenth century.
Baseball endures at least in part because it is a contemplative sport that delights in nuances.
Baseball is a game dominated by vital ghosts; it's a fraternity, like no other we have of the active and the no longer so, the living and the dead.

Paul said his parents gave him another chance a few weeks later -- stay with the program until he "graduated" in August and he would be welcomed home and given a chance to go to college.

Richards also knew he had a player with the Houston team who would work harder than the rest.

Paul Richards' success in turning around the pitching staffs in his managerial stints in Chicago and Baltimore was amazing.
Richards certainly had a whole lot to do with it, since he was the Houston GM from 1961 (it was he who handled their expansion draft choices) until 1965.
And Richards did a great job (as he had done previously in Chicago and Baltimore) of influencing his pitchers to throw strikes; the Colts/Astros were frequently among the best teams in baseball at not allowing walks.

Paul Richards neither led a team to a pennant as a field manager nor presided over a winner as a general manager.
The Braves had gone south, from Milwaukee to Atlanta, and Richards, who had led the old Crackers to glory, was deemed the man to rejuvenate the Braves in their new setting as vice president for baseball operations.
It was as close as Richards came to a pennant, and he left Atlanta and was out of baseball for the first time in 45 years.

The End of Baseball As We Knew It - The Players Union 1960-81
By the time this review is published, the 2002 major-league baseball season may have ended prematurely, the victim of a labor dispute between millionaire players and billionaire owners.
Korr puts labor issues and baseball in perspective with this history of the Major League Baseball Players Association from 1960 to 1981, when the union succeeded in overturning the century-old "reserve" clause, which bound a player to his original team for life.
From the time players were in the minor leagues, they knew they were part of a system where it made little sense to challenge the power of their clubs and even less to think about organizing to challenge the system itself.

Richards' scheme was inspired by the opportunity it created of being able to bring an appropriate pinch-hitter up to the plate if the Orioles had a scoring chance in the first inning.
Richards then restored orderly procedure by sending Jim Busby to center field and Billy Gardner to second base.
Like La Russa, Richards and Williams, a few other similarly imaginative managers have occasionally taken an innovative approach in attempts to gain an edge by manipulation of their lineups either before or during a game.

Catcher Richards used to blister the ball right back if he thought they were not trying hard enough, and he still growls when he thinks of baseball's casual losers: "They blow a game and they're not even mad about it." When the White Sox lose, Freshman Manager Richards implies, someone had better show some indignation.
Richards explains the switch, which is no novelty in sandlot ball but a rarity in the big leagues, with a characteristic comment: "I play the percentage if it will win a ball game."
Richards' hustling White Sox, a tooth and nail team, is already surefire at the gate (home attendance is up 29%).
