Topic: Paul Spong

Apostle Paul - John Shelby Spong
Paul was the hero of much of this first history of the Christian church, and most people have had their image of Paul created for them primarily by Acts.
Paul was a Jew born in the province of Cilicia in Asia Minor.
Paul watching the first Jewish Christians decentralize the Law in favor of grace was not unlike a fundamentalist watching his or her infallible Bible being replaced by an irresistible call into the insecurity of freedom.

 BISHOP SPONG by Paul Richardson
Bishop Spong is no great thinker but his frequent outbursts do help to shed some light on the crisis facing Anglicanism and on the role of bishops.
When Bishop Spong speaks of Christian doctrine, he gives no sign of believing that Christianity is a revealed faith and that the scriptures and tradition have authority because they witness to this revelation.

Paul was a gay man who attacked homosexuality to keep his own desires in check.
Kristof comes short of actually agreeing with Spong, but he does say "at least he's engaged in the debate," and encourages liberals to engage conservative Christians on their own turf, on their own terms.
If Spong is the best they have, I think they're better off with their current strategy of ridicule and ignore.

Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism-Book Review
Bishop Spong’s theme is consistent throughout: If we interpret these texts literally, they are in such conflict with what we know of the world that the texts will eventually cease to have any meaning whatsoever.
Bishop Spong’s main analysis is broken into seven sections, presented in chronological order of their authorship: (1) the five books of history in the Old Testament; (2) the Old Testament Prophets, Psalms and Proverbs, (3) the writings of Paul, and (4 through 7) the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John, in that order.
By lining these texts up in order of writing, beginning with Paul, Bishop Spong provides a clear, but succinct, presentation of the extensive modifications that were made to the Christ story between the time of Paul and the time that John was written many years later.

When Paul Spong, a New Zealand neuroscientist hired by the Vancouver Aquarium to study the behaviour of whales in captivity, contacted Robert Hunter, the 'Save the Whales' campaign which resulted took place initially under the banner of Project Ahab, due to Irving Stowe's resistance to broadening Greenpeace's scope beyond opposition to nuclear weapons.
Stowe's death in 1974 effectively ended this deadlock, and a re-chartered Phyllis Cormack steamed from Vancouver to meet the Soviet whaling fleet off the Californian coast in the spring of 1975.

This is relevant because the point of this chapter is that, despite their rejection of Jesus, Paul affirms that God’s covenant with the Jewish people is not revoked.
Paul put it this way in Romans 10:13-15: "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Therefore, as Paul says in Acts 17:30-31, "God commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead."
