STRZELECKI, Sir PAUL EDMUND DE (1797-1873), explorer and scientist, was born on 20 July 1797 at Gluszyna, near Poznan, Western Poland, the son of poor gentry, without land or title.
Strzelecki then went to Van Diemen's Land, where he became a close friend of the Franklins and did important work as explorer, geologist, and scientific farmer, and like the earlier Lhotsky made analyses of coal deposits.
Strzelecki thought it would be an important aid to the immigration of capital and men.

Strzelecki devoted himself to the relief of this great misery and his success was beyond any doubt, although obtained at the cost to himself of an attack of typhoid fever, traces of which remained with him for the rest of his days.
Strzelecki was a shareholder of the Peel River Land and Mineral Company, which became a subsidiary of the Australian Agricultural Company of N.S.W. In March, 1853, he was elected to the position of Chairman and Managing Director with a salary of £600 per annum.
Strzelecki died in London on October 6, 1873, and was buried in the Kensal Green Cemetery.

The Strzelecki Ranges in Gippsland are named in his honour.

Paul Edmund de Strzelecki (1797-1873), a Polish nobleman (though not a Count), is most noted in the annals of Australian history and science for the European discovery and naming of Mount Kosciusko.
Strzelecki's precise movements are not clear for the period between his arrival in April and the end of August 1839, when he set off on an expedition across the Blue Mountains to Bathurst, Wellington Valley and Orange.
Strzelecki had achieved much during his four years in the Colony, and the supposed visit to Illawarra was just one incident in a hectic schedule.
