Paul Zindel (May 15, 1936–March 27, 2003) was an American author and playwright.
Zindel also wrote numerous novels, all of them aimed at children or young adults, and many of them set in his home town of Staten Island, New York.
Zindel has two children, Lizabeth Zindel a published novelist, playwright and actress and filmmaker David Zindel.

When Paul Zindel died from cancer on March 27, 2003, at the age of 66, the literary world lost its Grand Poobah of young adult doom and gloom, the author of the bittersweet classics The Pigman and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds.
Zindel racked up literary awards while simultaneously giving voice to the cynicism enveloping many teenagers in those dark days of the 1970s, before MTV was around to cheer them up.
Zindel dared to tell young readers that their worst suspicions in life were true: The world is full of misery and hypocrisy, and not only can no one can guarantee that everything is going to turn out all right, but in fact things will probably suck for a good long while to come.

Paul Zindel, who drew on memories of his troubled childhood on Staten Island for a prize-winning play with a tongue-twisting title, ''The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,'' died on Thursday at the Jacob Perlow Hospice at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan.
Zindel an Obie Award in 1970 for Best American Play and a Pulitzer Prize in 1971, and he wrote the screenplay for the film version, which was directed by Paul Newman and starred Joanne Woodward.
Zindel married Bonnie Hildebrand, a novelist, in 1973.
