The first work excited much controversy on the score of its veracity, but subsequent investigation proved the correctness of du Chaillus statements as to the facts of natural history; though possibly some of the adventures he described as happening to himself were reproductions of the hunting stories of natives (see Proc.
The map accompanying Ashango-land was of unique value, but the explorers photographs and collections were lost when he was forced to flee from the hostility of the natives.
After some years residence in America, during which he wrote several books for the young founded upon his African adventures, du Chaillu turned his attention to northern Europe, and published in 1881 The Land of the Midnight Sun, in 188cr The Viking Age, and in 1900 The Land of the Long Night.

 ERBzine 0872m Africa Map
Little is known of Du Chaillu's ancestors, except that they were of one of the old French Huguenot families that had settled in Louisiana.
In 1863-`65 Du Chaillu made a second journey of exploration to Africa, the narrative of which appeared in 1867 as “A Journey through Ashango Land.” This time he discovered the pygmies of the Dark Forest, but his descriptions of the little people were likewise received with incredulity.
In a certain sense Du Chaillu is himself responsible for this feeling, for all his descriptions are so vivid and are so thrillingly told that the reader feels he is reading a work of pure invention, rather than a narrative of actual experience.

DU CHAILLU, Paul Belloni (dusha'yu'), traveler, born in Paris, France, 31 July 1835.
As Du Chaillu had made his observations from compass bearings only, their correctness could not be definitely proved, and he resolved to vindicate his reputation by a second expedition.
Du Chaillu, notwithstanding his vindication, determined to prosecute his expedition, for which he had made thorough preparation, He freighted a schooner with goods for presents to the natives, and sailed from England in August 1863.

Du Chaillu's first travels to Equatorial Africa were to an area previously unexplored by Europeans--the wooded region bordering the Equator, in the interior of Western Africa.
His further studies into the habits of the gorilla of Western Equatorial Africa was of remarkable benefit to scholars and scientists laying a groundwork for the ongoing study of this animal and Du Chaillu was further able to obtain and study live specimens because of his relationships with the indigenous peoples of the region.
Du Chaillu considered that these peoples were inhabitants of the least developed area of Africa and that a study of them was of immeasurable worth to the developed world.

Modern History Sourcebook: Paul du Chaillu: Travels in Africa, 1868-1870
[Tappan Introduction] DU CHAILLU had an exceedingly good preparation for his work as an African explorer, for he spent his youth on the West Coast of Africa, where his father was trader and consul.
He was probably the first white man who ever saw gorillas, and his reports of the behavior of these animals, and of the tribes of pygmies that he had met,---indeed, of the extent of his explorations in general,---were bitterly attacked.
Du Chaillu had used only a compass, and so could not prove his records of travel, but he now set to work to learn how to use a camera and various kinds of astronomical instruments.

It is intended to supplement both recent studies on concepts of race in the second half of the nineteenth century and recent theories on the body.
The talk will focus primarily on the works of Paul Belloni Du Chaillu, who first brought pygmies to the attention of Americans and Europeans in 1867 with the publication of A Journey to Ashango-Land and Further Penetration into Equatorial Africa.
The essay will argue that Du Chaillu and later travelers used depictions of pygmies to bolster myths about the competition of races, the inevitable extinction of inferior races, and the origins of humanity.

Description: Author: DU CHAILLU, Paul B. Title: Explorations & Adventures in Equatorial Africa; With Accounts of the Manners and Customs of the People, and of the Chace of the Gorilla, Crocodile, Leopard, Elephant, Hippopotamus, and Other Animals.
Notes: After being scorned for imagining and exaggerating in the account of his first exploration, Du Chaillu learned how to properly and scientifically document his observations.
Armed with this knowledge, he travelled to Africa again, made initial European contact with some tribes, confirmed the existence of Pygmies, and brought back the first ever seen gorillas to the United States.
