Greta suddenly lands a choice job editing a young superstar's second novel (because he's heard of her ruthless cutting).
Paula's story, like the others in Personal Velocity, allows sympathy without resorting to heavy-handed redemption, insight without instruction.
(The film's "gimmick" comes in here -- all the stories touch on the story of this accident, underlining that they all take place at the same time.) When Paula picks up a young hitchhiker whose extensively bruised body reveals a history of abuse, she's moved to rethink her own priorities.

Tate Magazine Issue 8: Paula Rego
Girlhood and its appetites have inspired Paula Rego’s picture-making for over 30 years, and her works in this vein include the brilliantly fluent and mischievous sequence of paintings The Vivian Girls, inspired by Henry Darger’s extraordinary, epic scroll novel, populated by heroines, part Enid Blyton schoolgirls, part Surrealist femmes-enfants.
In Paula Rego’s work, in her ‘artist’s dreamland’, the peculiar and the elfish twist and turn with a similar rebellious vitality.
Rego has explored, in a myriad different sequences of pictures, the conditions of her own upbringing in Portugal, her formation as a girl and a woman, and the oscillation between stifling social expectations and liberating female stratagems.

Paula Woods' Review of The Full Matilda
Her first-person narrative punctuates the novel and gives voice to the dramas and disappointments that shaped six generations.
Ironically it is Martin's nemesis Matilda who becomes the boys' safe haven, even as she demands they adhere to the family's exacting code.
But the sensitive rendering of a lost world plus the depth of feeling revealed through the relationships of Matilda and the men in her life places "The Full Matilda" in a broader context that one hopes brings Haynes the critical acclaim he so richly deserves.

Horror as a "genre" simply did not exist until about 30 years ago, and its emergence as a publishing market niche was not so much a literary development as the result of the success of several films based on novels.
Horror literature is certainly not a recent invention, nor is the horror novel anything new.
His novel 'Salem's Lot came out in 1975 and became a TV movie in 1979, the same year King first reached hardcover bestseller status (with The Dead Zone).

As "the only purely imagined event in the book," the inclusion of Joan's unexpected and unprepared for suicide immediately following this episode, is, as Paula Bennett has written, "necessitated not by the novel's plot, themes, or characters but by Plath's own emotional understanding of her text.
The novel presents the transformation of Esther Greenwood from a young woman who hates the idea of serving men in any way to one who appears to earn her exit from the asylum by committing herself, albeit unwittingly, precisely to that project.
The novel dramatizes a tragic self-dismemberment in which the heroine, because of her very strengths and aspirations, appears to split off those components of herself that represent patriarchally-defined expectations of women, projecting these aspects of herself on her mother, her grandmother, Dodo Conway, Mrs.

Sure, Stepford's a little campy, and its blistering, pessimistic view of gender relations borders on hysteria (not surprising, since it's based on a novel by unsubtle pulpmeister Ira Levin).
Joanna's uneasiness with her new digs is exacerbated by the behavior of her neighbors--the men are patronizing and secretive, the women servile automatons dressed in ruffles and flower prints who seem unnaturally preoccupied with recipes, detergents, and shopping.
