Fritz Molden, a resistance fighter who later became a journalist and a publisher, recalls that Minister of Education Felix Hurdes persuaded his mother, the writer Paula von Preradovic "herself the granddaughter of the Croatian national poet Petar von Preradovic" to submit an entry for the competition.
Paula von Preradovic, who was busy working on a new novel, had little time to spare for her entry, and Education Minister Hurdes had to jog her memory several times.
On February 25, 1947, the cabinet made a decision declaring the new national anthem to consist of Paula von Preravodovic' text and the melody from Mozart's masonic cantata.

Austrian Insights - The Imperial Anthem
Because in 1922 the Germans stole the old Austrian imperial anthem (composed by Austrian Joseph Haydn), and made it the national anthem of the Republic of Germany.
The text that was finally approved by the emperor was written by poet Baron Joseph Christian von Zedlitz.
But in Germany in 1841 Hoffmann von Fallersleben published his "Lied der Deutschen," giving Haydn's tune a new set of verses that was to become the source of political conflict 80 years later, as mentioned in the opening paragraph.

The Austrian national anthem, sung to the tune of a 1791 Mozart cantata, was written by the late Paula von Preradovic in 1947, two years after the modern Austrian State was formed.
But Liese Prokop, the Interior Minister and a former Olympic pentathlon silver medallist, said that it was only natural to change an anthem to reflect changes in society.
Fritz Molden, Frau von Preradovic's son, told Austria's Kurier newspaper that he had no problem with the proposed changes.
