The Paulets of Basing, a cadet branch of the family of Hinton St. George, acquired their Hampshire residence in the early 15th century on the marriage of William Paulet's great-grandfather to Constance, a coheir of Thomas Poynings, the last Lord St. John of Basing (d.
Paulet had been appointed joint master of the King wards with Thomas Englefield in 1526, but the claims of Englefield´s judgeship meant that Paulet was soon the sole effective master.
The only one of Paulet´s children known to have sat in the Commons was his son Chidiock, although several of his near relatives did so, among them his cousin Hugh Paulet and his nephews Sir Henry Capell and John Zouche, who was first returned for Hindon, another of the Bishop of Winchester's boroughs.

William was eldest son of Sir John Paulet of Basing, near Basingstoke in Hampshire, the head of a younger branch of an ancient Somerset family seated in the fourteenth century at Pawlet or Paulet and Road, close to Bridgwater.
Paulet’s father held a command against the Cornish rebels in 1497 and died after 1519.
In the Summer of 1533, Paulet went to France as a member of the Embassy which the Duke of Norfolk took over to join King Francis I in a proposed interview with the Pope, and kept Cromwell informed of its pro­gress.

The two-storied house with its long, shaded verandah, lying peacefully asleep under the watchful gaze of the Bosberg Mountains, is a familiar landmark in the small Karoo town.
In her will, Dorothy Evans bequeathed to the London Missionary Society, “…her house and yard situated in Paulet Street…” In December 1842 the Superintendent of the Society’s Mission in South Africa applied to the Governor, Sir George Napier, for an allowance of twenty pounds per annum for the teacher of Coloured classes at Somerset.
A piece of ground in Paulet Street was acquired and on July 19, 1881, the foundation was laid.

During February Hussey records (inter alia!) the changing goals of Shackleton's escape route, from Paulet Island to Deception Island to 'one of the South Shetland Islands - Clarence Island or Elephant Island'.
The final escape from the floes to Elephant Island is represented by a gap in the journal from 3 April to 26 April, when Hussey gives a resume of the terrible voyage: '6 of the party went off their head.
Owing to Larsen's exceptional skill in this crisis, all his men survived this disaster and were able to bring basic food, fuel and equipment onto the icepack.
