It's an album with a variety of moods and one which is destined, I reckon, to become known as one of Scaggs' best.
A native of Dingle Co. Kerry, although Scanlon had been performing round the Galway pubs since she was 15, she first came to most people's attention when she provided the vocals for John Spillane's All The Ways You Wander on Sharon Shannon's Libertango album.
Shannon repays the favour on Scanlon's debut, produced by and featuring Lunasa guitarist Donogh Hennessy, lending her accordion to a breathy voiced but jauntily earthy bodhran driven version of Cyril Tawney's Sally Free and Easy.

Pauline Scanlon's CD "Red Colour Sun" starts with a pop-folk to rock turning original; "Churchyard" tells the story of a young girl meeting the devil, inspired by the traditional ballad "False Knight on the Road".
Pauline is the singer of the Sharon Shannon band, so accordionist Sharon gives a helping push and draw (-> FW#17, FW#28), as did Lunasa guitarist Donogh Hennessy (-> FW#29).
Among the many gems on this album, it is, interestingly, the traditional ones which stand out as the real diamonds, above all Pauline Scanlon's seemingly effortless rendering of "Molly Ban" [see CD review above] and Sinéad O'Connor's breathtaking version of "Paddy's Lament" [-> FW#24].

However, Sinéad O'Connor's simple, ardent treatment of the The Seven Rejoices Of Mary raises the tone, as does All The Ways You Wander, featuring the girlish, bell-like soprano of Pauline Scanlon.
It's not exactly more of the same, because it's largely Irish, compared to D M's more international feel, incorporating American folk influences, but you will be easily absorbed into the jaunty reels, and the heartfelt airs, courtesy of Pauline Scanlon and Sinad O'Connor.
Hogs and Heifers is a delightfully dainty fiddle piece, which I'm still trying to learn to play by ear.
