Paulino (known as Paolino in U.S.A) was a Basque heavyweight boxer who was the greatest heavyweight to come out of Spain.
Uzcudun was the European heavyweight champion, and he fought heavyweight champions Joe Louis, Max Baer, Max Schmeling (thrice) and Primo Carnera during his career.
Uzcudun also "retired" the famed Harry Wills, when he stopped him in four rounds on July 13, 1927.

His debut as a Heavyweight on July 22, against former world Heavyweight champion Jack Sharkey, ended with a fifteen round draw (tie).
In 1932, he went 5-1, beating such fighters as King Levinsky and Paulino Uzcudun before facing former world Heavyweight champion Max Schmeling, who knocked Walker out in round eight.
He went down in weight again, to the Light Heavyweight division, in 1933, when he lost a fifteen round decision to Maxie Rosenbloom for the world title.

Max then went home, drew with Paulino in Barcelona in twelve rounds, stopped Walter Neusel in eight, Steve Hamas in a return bout in nine, and Paulino again in twelve, and now came back to America for another campaign.

As the World teattered on the brink of the Great Depression, a relative unknown Germany heavyweight, Max Schmeling fought Spain's veteran, Paulino Uzcudun,for the right to meet Jack Sharkey for the vacant title.
Following a clear cut fifteen round decision over Paulino, Schmeling conducted a thirty city exhibition tour.
By June of 1930 Schmeling and Sharkey would would enter the ring to due battle for the first vacated heavyweight crown in the recorded history of the division.
