Paulos Tesfagiorgis from Eritrea is to be the first sub-Saharan African ever to receive the prestigious human rights award from the Thorolf Rafto Foundation - also wrongfully dubbed the 'Human Rights Nobel Price'.
Mr Tesfagiorgis has been in exile since 2001 and is working for peaceful dialogue to achieve democratic reform in Eritrea.
As leader of the Eritrean Relief Association (1976-1990), Mr Tesfagiorgis was responsible for securing access to food supplies and health services for the civilian population in the liberated areas.

Paulos Tesfagiorgis was instrumental in generating funds for the organization through the Eritrean Relief Association (ERA.) After Eritrea's independence, Mr.
Paulos Tesfagiorgis turned down offers to work for any of the government ministries and became a professor at the University of Asmara, where he taught law.
Paulos Tesfagiorgis, along with the Chairman of the CCE, Dr. Bereket Habteselasse, as well as eleven other Eritrean professionals and intellectuals published what came to be known as the "G-13 Berlin Manifesto." The manifesto was highly critical of the Isaias Afwerki administration.

On Mr Tesfagiorgis, the Foundation informs that he has been a central figure in the independence fight against Ethiopia - headed by current President Issayas Afewerki - which led to Eritrea's independence in 1991.
The year after, 15 leading members of the ruling party also called President Afewerki to initiate democratisation, only leading them to be imprisoned by the regime.

Even during the war Paulos Tesfagiorgis was busy telling Ethiopians and westerners that the GOE has filled its army with child soldiers.
It has always been the case that he was using his "NGOs" and his tenure as a member of the constitution commission to continuously undermine the GOE, the front and Issayas Afewerki in particular (a point of convergence with Bereket).
