 BibliOdyssey: Paulus Kal: Kunst des Fechtens II
Paulus Kal was a Master fencing/combat instructor employed in the mid-15th century by a Bavarian Duke and he was also a contemporary and rival of the more famous Hans Talhoffer.
And it is from Kal's writings that we know something of the manner by which the secret Liechtenauer techniques were disseminated.
Kal's manual is about 200 pages long with beautiful and detailed illustrations about fighting on horseback with sword and lance, on foot with lance, sword, dagger and poleaxe, duelling with shields; sword and buckler techniques and wrestling, on virtually every page.

 Sword and Buckler of Liechtenaur
This particular set-play is illustrated in Paulus Kal’s Fechtbuch, with a variation shown in one edition of Jörg Wilhalm’s’ Fechtbuch of c.1540.
Kal’s version shows a grip with the “thumb towards the point”.
This is a common sword and buckler technique found in the I.33, Talhoffer, and Paulus Kal.

The Medieval European Martial Arts Guild is a modern-day fechtschule (fight-school) that teaches the Kunst des Fechtens (Art of Fighting) developed by Master Johannes Liechtenauer in the mid 1300's.
Our studies focus mainly on the commentaries on Liechtenauer's art found in the codex MS 3227a, Sigmund Ringeck's Fechtbuch, and Peter von Danzig's Fechtbuch, as well as the techniques depicted by Paulus Kal and Hans Talhoffer.
We do not teach historical combat as a sport or re-creation, but as a functional martial art.

He is the author several Fechtbücher, illustrated treatises describing methods of fighting with various weapons, including unarmed combat (grappling), dagger, long sword, pole weapons and mounted combat.
He is a contemporary of fencing-master Paulus Kal (whose manuscript may contain hints of professional rivalry between the two).
Talhoffer taught within the tradition of Johannes Liechtenauer.

He traveled through the Holy Roman Empire, Eastern Europe, and Italy, gathering the various techniques of local masters.
A much later student of the “Liechtenauer school,” Paulus Kal, lists of few of these masters, now lost to the mists of time: Virgily of Cracow, Lamprecht of Prauge, Andres of Liegnitz.
By 1350, the master had settled down and begun to teach, precisely where is unknown, although Swabia or Austria are likely.
