 Bryce Canyon National Park
Following the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, Bryce Canyon National Park is eighteen mile long, up to five miles wide, and in place, 800 ft deep.
Uneven pressures beneath the plateau caused it to break along fault lines into a series of smaller plateaus at different levels known as the "Grand Staircase." Bryce Canyon National Park occupies part of one of these plateaus - the Paunsaugunt.
The Kanarra Cattle Company and several sheepmen used the plateau adjacent to Bryce for grazing in the early 1870s, but the first permanent settler in the area was Ebenezer Bryce, pioneer cattleman, who took up a homestead in the fall of 1875.

The Colorado Plateau, also called the Colorado Plateaus Province, is a physiographic region of the Intermontane Plateaus, roughly centered on the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States.
Occupying the southeast corner of the Colorado Plateau is the Datil Section.
Some of the prominent isolated mountain ranges of the Plateau, such as Ute Mountain and the Carrizo Mountains, both near the Four Corners, are cored by igneous rocks that were intruded about 70 million years ago, during the Laramide orogeny.

Small pebbles and large Volkswagen bus sized boulders commonly fall from the sides of existing hoodoos and the sides of the Paunsaugunt Plateau by frost wedging and gravity.
Hoodoos protrude from the sides of the plateau in lines that follow joint patterns caused by faults that uplifted the area.
Other names — Paunsaugunt, place or home of the beavers; Paria, muddy water or elk water; Panguitch, water or fish; and Yovimpa, point of pines— were derived from the Paiute language.

In the Paiute language, paria refers to muddy water, and paunsaugunt means home of the beavers.
The "canyon" is really a collection of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters along the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.
It was Clarence E. Dutton, geologist for the Powell expedition, who christened the colorful rock amphitheaters as the "Pink Cliffs." The unique hues of the landscape are due to minerals in the layers of limestone, sandstone and mudstone.
