Millipede - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The structural character upon which these superclasses are based is the position of the generative apertures which open anteriorly in the Prosogonea and posteriorly in the Opisthogonea.
Although the Pauropoda and Symphyla are not, strictly speaking, Diplopoda, these three groups of prosogoneate arthropods are here for convenience considered together.
The Pauropoda are divided into three rather sharply defined groups or families which may be briefly characterized as follows :- Pauropodidae.

Pauropods & Symphylans   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Pauropoda, for example, have a single pair of legs on each body segment, as found in the centipedes, but most of the body segments are partly fused along the back in pairs (see diagram on the right), so that from above each apparent segment seems to have two pairs of legs.
Thus, the Pauropoda are a sort of 'half-way' stage between the ancestral myriapods, which were probably more or less centipede-like with one pair of legs on each body segment, and the millipedes which have two pairs of legs on each apparent segment.
The Pauropoda and Symphyla are both rather obscure groups and relatively little is known about their biology and habits.

Pauropoda have branched antennae and 9 or 10 pairs of legs (below left).
Some juvenile centipedes have fewer than 15 pairs of legs, but these juveniles can be distinguished from Pauropoda because the antennae are unbranched, and from Symphyla because the rear end lacks cerci (below right).

Possibly, one could interpret the name Pauropoda as typified, formerd from the generic name Pauropus by adding suffix and ending "-oda".
When the name Pauropoda was established, representatives of the taxon Hexamerocerata Remy 1953 were unknown; so the name Pauropoda univocally matches both the taxon including Hexamerocerata and the taxon excluding Hexamerocerata (i.e.
Traditionally, the name Pauropoda is used only in the wide sense, i.e.

Some regard it as a composite of the two pairs of maxillae, others maintain that it is formed exclusively by the first pair of maxillae, the second pair being entirely suppressed; at least part of the dorsal part of the second maxillary segment is represented by the ‘collum’ (RFB: fig.
Hemianamorphosis occurs in all Pauropoda and Symphyla and also in primitive Diplopoda; this character is thus a clear symplesiomorphy for the members of ‘Anamorpha’.

In addition, summary tables for Coleoptera, Collembola, Diplopoda, Microcoryphia, Pauropoda, and Protura were prepared from spreadsheet data to provide a quick reference to the identity, location, and seasonality of each species in these groups.
All identified specimens of Coleoptera, Collembola, Diplopoda, Pauropoda, and Protura are being stored appropriately in the University of Tennessee Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, on a temporary basis.
As soon as practicable, arrangements will be made with the museum at GSMNP to receive specimens of all species, and to provide for dispersal of extra specimens to appropriate public facilities including the University of Tennessee Entomology museum, according to NPS guidelines.

'Although Pauropoda are of widespread occurrence in Australia, they have not attracted much attention from systematists, probably owing to their small size and obscure habitat.' (Tiegs 1943: 151) As of 2003, 18 species of native and introduced Pauropoda in seven genera and two families had been reported from mainland Australia (Australian Biological Resources Study).
Most Australian Pauropoda are tiny (less than 2 mm long) and live in moist, organic-rich soil.
Life histories have not been studied in Australia, but local species are likely to feed on soil microbes and/or dead soil animals.
