  Pavel Axelrod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Raised in Chernigov, a small provincial town in the Russian Empire (currently Ukraine), Axelrod was the son of a poor Jewish innkeeper.
Axelrod co-founded the Marxist group Emancipation of Labor in Switzerland with his lifelong friend Georgi Plekhanov and Vera Zasulich in 1883.

Axelrod, who had gone to Geneva to submit the draft of the statutes to the expatriate members, failed to return.
The arrest, in July, of Yelizaveta Durnoyo was another serious blow to the group: she was its chief 'angel.' The daughter of a wealthy army officer and the niece of the Governor of Moscow, she is said to have turned over to the Society the sum of sixteen thousand roubles.
Axelrod, who represented Black Repartition in the negotiations, argued that fighting the government was not fighting for Socialism and that not to make this clear was to create confusion.

One of the founders of the "Geneva Group for the Federation of Labour." Together with the St. Petersburg-based "Union for Struggle of the Liberation of the Working Class," this was the foundation of the Russian Social Democratic Workers Party (RSDRP).
In Stockholm when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, Axelrod elected to remain abroad, and died in exile.
The material in the Axelrod Collection dates from 1878 to 1924 and consists of autographs of his published and unpublished articles, correspondence, including that with other leading politicians, and photographs.
