Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov (Russian: Павел Степанович Нахимов; June 23, 1802 – June 28, 1855) was one of the most famous admirals in Russian naval history, best remembered as the commander of naval and land forces during the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War.
Born in the Gorodok village of Vyazma district of Smolensk region, the son of a retired Russian Army major, Nakhimov entered the Naval Academy for the Nobility (Morskoy Shlyakhetskiy Korpus) in St Petersburg in 1815.
Nakhimov was buried inside St Vladimir Cathedral in Sevastopol along with Mikhail Lazarev, V.A. Kornilov and Vladimir Istomin.

The Russians, under the command of a hero of Navarino sea battle admiral Nakhimov, sank the Ottoman fleet at Sinope on November 30.
Admiral Nakhimov was mortally wounded in the head by a sniper shot, and died on June 30, 1855.

His lucky break came in March 1822, when he was assigned to the frigate Kreiser; the vessel took part the round-the-globe expedition commanded by well-known Russian explorer Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, who had already undertaken several such voyages.

Admiral Nakhimov, the participant of the first siege of Sevastopol, was elevated to the status of national hero by Soviet propagandists.
One of the examples of the approach employed by Tarle is the case of the military engineer E. Totleben, who was in charge of the fortifications at the time of the siege and whose talent and activity contributed immensely to the success of the imperial army.
Nakhimov in fact was a hero of Sinope (a successful navy battle against the Turks in the autumn of 1853) but played a secondary role in the Sevastopol defence.

There are lots of monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotie War 1941-1945: the Obelisk in Honour of the City-Hero on the Cape Khrustalnyi.
And the most beautiful monument to Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov is in the centre too.
