Pavement (roads) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Most asphalt pavements are built on an imported gravel base which is generally at least as thick as the asphalt layer, although some 'full depth' pavements are built directly on the native subgrade.
Brick, cobblestone and wood plank pavements were once common in urban areas throughout the world, but due to their high manual labor requirements they are typically only maintained for historical reasons.
As pavements primarily fail due to fatigue (in a manner similar to metals), the damage done to a pavement increases exponentially with the axle load of the vehicles traveling on it.

Pavement (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Around 1992 Pavement became a full-time band, with the addition of bassist Mark Ibold - who had been one of the band's first fans - and extra percussionist Bob Nastanovich, a fellow museum security guard with Malkmus and David Berman.
Malkmus has insisted over the years that the line is meant to be light-hearted, and sung from the point of view of the aging-hippy character in the song, but it only cemented the band's reputation in the mainstream as elitist snobs.
Pavement appeared on an episode of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast entitled, appropriately, "Pavement".

limestone pavement - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about limestone pavement
The freezing and thawing of rain and its mild acidic properties cause cracks and joints to enlarge, forming limestone pavements, potholes, caves, and caverns.
The weathering process is thought to entail a combination of freeze-thaw (the alternate freezing and thawing of ice in cracks) and carbonation (the dissolving of minerals in the limestone by weakly acidic rainwater).
Malham Tarn in North Yorkshire is an example of a limestone pavement.

Bonded concrete overlays of concrete pavements are primarily used to increase pavement structural capacity.
Bonded concrete overlays are not recommended when the existing pavement is badly deteriorated and a substantial amount of removal and replacement of existing layers is necessary during rehabilitation.
Bonding the concrete overlay to the asphalt pavement creates a composite section in which the load is shared between the concrete and existing asphalt.

Pervious pavements can be made of concrete, asphalt, open-celled stones, and gravel, that are mixed in a manner that creates an open cell structure allowing water and air to pass through.

Now, I'm not so rash as to call Pavement "The American Radiohead"-— such a comparison would be sonically and chronologically flawed, as well as maddeningly cliched—- but as the decade that spawned them both is on the wane, the pair beg at least some mutual consideration.
Pavement follows suit on their fifth full- length effort for Matador, Terror Twilight.
Opening the nineties with the carefully careless Slanted and Enchanted, Pavement burst into almost immediate cult hero status as rock's keen grad school quipsters, but the band's artistic path proved nearly as confounding as one of its notoriously off- kilter melodies.

There’s a telling moment during a concert on Pavement’s final tour (captured for posterity on a Matador DVD, Slow Century) when Malkmus directs the audience to a pair of handcuffs dangling from his mic stand and remarks offhandedly that the stage prop symbolizes what it’s like to be in a band.

Pavement was still in solid form in "Brighten the Corners." While it may not be the best, the mix of complex rock and thoughtful singing is enough to make it another budding classic by Pavement.

Pavement's laid-back fourth effort, 1997's Brighten the Corners, with its mellow sun-baked classic "Shady Lane," suggested the band was getting a bit older and possibly even more mature.

By then, Pavement were touring extensively, recording Peel Sessions on BBC radio, and becoming the most written-about band in American indie rock, but the mystery of that great debut album had faded.
In fact, Pavement had amassed such a wealth of new material, that several songs from both sessions made their way to the 1995 follow-up Wowee Zowee.
