Pavement (roads) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most asphalt pavements are built on an imported gravel base which is generally at least as thick as the asphalt layer, although some 'full depth' pavements are built directly on the native subgrade.
Brick, cobblestone and wood plank pavements were once common in urban areas throughout the world, but due to their high manual labor requirements they are in some countries typically only maintained for historical reasons, while in other countries they are still common in local streets.
As pavements primarily fail due to fatigue (in a manner similar to metals), the damage done to a pavement increases exponentially with the axle load of the vehicles traveling on it.

Contruction and Makeup of Roman Roads   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
There are sections of road where the surface layer is only two to three inches thick, while some are one to two feet in the center and thin to a few inches at the sides (Margary 21).
Chevallier also quotes Broise in the discussion of road surfaces, saying that there are places where the excavated road is found to be a series of layers of gravel as thick as a meter, the result of numerous resurfacings (87).
In closing, it is most important to remember that the ancient Roman road consists of three layers: a bottom foundation layer, often of stone; a middle layer of somewhat softer material (such as sand or gravel); and a surface, or “metalling,” usually a gravel, sometimes paving stones.

 [No title]
Pavement markings and delineation devices serve important path guidance functions on horizontal curves, particularly under adverse visibility conditions, at twilight, and at nighttime.
An early study of surface pavement markings, carried out with an interactive driving simulator plus field evaluations, concluded that driver performance--measured by the probability of exceeding lane limits--was optimized when the luminance (brightness) contrast between pavement markings and the roadway was 2.0 (Blackwell and Taylor, 1969).
In addition, the validity of the assumption of a speed differential for wet pavement conditions between design speed and top driving speed is questionable, since there is very little evidence to substantiate the assumption that all motorists are likely to reduce their speed on wet pavements.

Selection Procedures for Pavement Warranties - Pavement - FHWA
For example, segregation and block cracking of HMA pavements does affect the performance of the pavement but it is a subjective evaluation and is already included in the rideability, or IRI, of the facility as well as in longitudinal cracking indicators.
Pavement indicators such as friction that are not part of the HPMS program can still be objectively evaluated by utilizing the agency's existing pavement friction evaluation program.
Pavement distresses such as various types of cracking, corrugations, or distortions are not measured or rated directly, but they may affect the ride measurement and may need correction to provide satisfactory warranty values.

Roads that had been improved for bicycles in the 1890s were often ruined by automobile traffic, and dirt roads remained impassable for much of the year.
Early cars—particularly the Ford Model T, which sat up high—were designed to cope with rural roads, but roads had to change to accommodate cars.
By 1935, more than a third of rural roads were surfaced, and many were paved with concrete and asphalt for motor traffic.

Bicyclists and railroad companies began calling for good roads in the 1880s, but American road building really took off in the 20th century as a response to rising numbers of cars and trucks.
Some of these new roads were private initiatives, such as the Lincoln Highway, but after 1916, federal law and government money fueled much of the country’s road building.
