Pavey Ark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pavey Ark is a fell in the English county of Cumbria.
Pavey Ark is most often climbed from the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, located some 2 km to the south.
Pavey Ark can also be ascended from Stickle Tarn via Easy Gully, North Rake or by the path to Harrison Stickle.

Thunacar Knott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thunacar Knott seen from Pavey Ark, the fell summit is the insignificant point on the moorland in the picture centre
Thunacar Knott is a fell in the central part of the English Lake District in the county of Cumbria, recent surveys give the fell a height of 723 metres (2372 feet), a significant increase to the 2351 feet given by Alfred Wainwright in his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.
The fell is situated in Great Langdale in the midst of one of the most popular areas for walking in the district, it is surrounded by the much-loved Langdale fells of Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle, Loft Crag and Pavey Ark.

The Lake District - Pavey Ark
Pavey Ark is a member of the Langdale Pikes range, although some say that its lack of a distinctive pointy outline disqualifies it from being a Pike "proper".
Technically, Pavey Ark is merely a buttress of the nearby Thunacar Knott, having a northward prominence of only twenty or thirty metres; nevertheless, from the south it is the biggest face in Langdale and has a commanding presence.
The face of Pavey Ark is largely the reserve of climbers, but there is one rock route suitable for walkers with a head for heights.

And below Pavey Ark is Stickle Tarn, where one can sit in a magical, hidden world, where everything is quiet and the views are spectacular.
In the books I have read on the Lake District I have often seen it mentioned that Pavey Ark is merely the front buttress of Thunacar Knott, so I was interested to check this out in order to make up my own mind, and to some extent I could see their point.

A Lake District Walk - Pavey Ark and Jack's Rake
The Rake is classed as a grade 1 scramble and it does involve regular use of your arms to pull you up to some of the steeper parts of the ascent.
On the other side of the tarn is Pavey Ark so then it's straight up Jack's Rake to height where all the Langdale Pikes are available to explore.
It is a great place to relax and look at what lies ahead because from here the cut of Jack's Rake as it makes its way from top to bottom of Pavey Ark from left to right is clear to see.

Pike o' Stickle, Harrison Stickle & Pavey Ark - Lake District Cumbria- a walk from Walking Britain
This walk was undertaken in fresh snow, up to three feet deep in places, which made it all the more spectacular, and is a variation to the usual 'tourist route' which starts with Pavey Ark. In good conditions I would allow a comfortable 5 hours to take in the tremendous views.
From the cairn, the third summit of Pavey Ark can be seen atop an impressively rugged face, with the Tarn glimmering way below.
If you're feeling energetic, continue NNE to Thunacar Knott, otherwise bear NNW along the ridge to Pavey Ark. In the snow this was quite a scramble through the outcrop that forms the summit.

Jack's Rake can be seen here running diagonally upwards and to the left across the awesome face of Pavey Ark, from the bottom of Easy Gully to the top of the inappropriately named, Little Gully, crossing Great Gully on the way.
On the horizon are, from the left, Great Dodd, Stybarrow Dodd, Raise, Lower Man, Helvellyn, and Nethermost Pike.
On the left in the middle distance is the ridge from Sergeant Man to Tarn Crag, both out of the picture.

Leaving the Cardiff Luddites behind grumbling about the bad weather forecast we nipped up the motorways to a pub in the Lakes in time for a few drinks and then camped in the field around the corner.
Likewise, the East side of Birmingham exerted a strong pull on the minibus to the delight of some of the Motorway Baggers on the trip who can now tick off some more numbers in the back of their well-thumbed Road Atlases.
