The area of Pavonia, belonged to burgomaster (merchant-nobleman) Michael Reyniersz Pauw of Amsterdam.
It was affected by the ill-advised policies towards the native inhabitants pursued by the Dutch governor William Kieft (1638-1646).

It was the policy of the West India Company to purchase lands from the Indians in accordance with Dutch law, and on November 22, 1630, Pauw bought the land from the Lenni Lenape.
From the start, he had difficulty finding settlers for it (this was the Golden Age in the Netherlands, a period of unparalleled prosperity, and few people wanted to risk the uncertainties of taming a wilderness).
What had been Pavonia grew in later years into the cities of Hoboken and Jersey City: gritty, boisterous towns that benefitted from their location just across the water from one of the world's great cities.

Pavonia hastata belongs to the Pavonia genus, which contains around 270 species, of which around 220 are found in the tropics and subtropics of the American continent.
Many Pavonia species have potential as ornamentals, though relatively few are currently used for that purpose and it may be difficult to obtain plants.
The style is another difference between Pavonia and Hibiscus species: while plants in the genus Hibiscus always have the style divided in 5, Pavonia species have twice as many stigmas.

Wright Pavonia is an upright somewhat shrubby perennial that can reach a height of one to three feet.
The velvety leaves are 1 to 2 1/2 inches long and are covered with short white hairs.

pavonia, with the males lacking almost all brown and orange pigmentation so that they appear whitish-grey.
Records from Algeria appear to be erroneous; however, there is a specimen in the British Museum of Natural History (BM(NH)) from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, so this species may yet be confirmed from Algeria.

In 1643 the Mohawks (part of the Iroquois Confederation) made a peace treaty with the Dutch and shortly thereafter attacked a band of Wappingers Indians.
When this group fled to a Dutch shelter at Pavonia, they were executed.
This atrocity, often referred to as the Pavonia Massacre, resulted in the deaths of 80 men, women, and children.

The carr encroachment of the Fen this century has also benefitted a number of species.
The Goat Moth, Nb (Cossus cossus), Cream-bordered Green Pea, Nb, (Earias clorana), Hornet Moth, Nb, (Sesia apiformis), Yellow-legged Clearwing, Nb, (Synanthedon vespiformis) and the Emperor, (Pavonia pavonia)- feeding on Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) were all recorded in 1998.
The Goat Moth appears now to be a common species on the Fen and has even been attracted to light, its feeding habitats are rather a mystery though as no willows have been found with the characteristic damage.
