		The village is located in the northeast portion of Paw Paw Township at the confluence of the east and south branches of the Paw Paw River.
		Paw Paw was incorporated in 1837 and is located in the southwestern portion of Michigan, on Interstate 94 approximately 20 miles west of Kalamazoo.
		Paw Paw is named for the pawpaw trees which once grew along the Paw Paw River.

	History of Porter Township, Van Buren County, Michigan
		In 1870 the township voted $15,000 in aid of the Paw Paw Valley Railroad, which was to pass through Porter, but the project failed.
		Settlements in the central part of the township were made as early as 1835, in which year Benjamin Reynolds, of Ohio, came with a large family and located 160 acres in section 15.
		In 1836 he bought 200 acres of government land in Porter township, on sections 20, 29, and 30, and while preparing a place of habitation upon his new possessions, he lived with his wife (a daughter of George Tittle, of Decatur) in Dolphin Morris' old log cabin on Little Prairie.

	Lawrence Township and Village
		In June 1835, John Allen of Ann Arbor, Michigan, entered a forty-acre tract of land on section ten in Lawrence Township on the south side of the Paw Paw River.
		In 1846, John R. Baker, a lawyer from Paw Paw, came into possession of much of the village in foreclosure from Allen, and he replatted and renamed it Lawrence.
		By 1869 the village was incorporated by an act of the Michigan legislature.
