It was enacted, that the towns upon the river, from the north bounds of Windsor, with Farmington, to thirty miles island, should be one county, to be called the county of Hartford.
That from Paw-catuck river, with Norwich, to the west bounds of Hammonasset, should be one county, by the name of the county of New-London; and that from the east bounds of Stratford to the western boun-dary of the colony, be another county, to be known by the name of the county of Fairfield.
Pawcatuck river was never known by the name of Narraganset river, and it made no bay; consequently the mouth of it, and the sea there, could not be called Narraganset bay.

 The Pawcatuck River
The glacially formed Pawcatuck River watershed spans an area of 317 square miles—260 square miles in Rhode Island and 57 square miles in Connecticut.
The first known users of the Pawcatuck River were the Native American Indian tribes of Niantic, Pequot, and Narragansett, who hunted and fished throughout the extensive watershed.
Improvement of water quality conditions in the river and estuary began when the textile industry collapsed, reducing the volume of wastewater entering the river, and continued with the construction of sewage treatment facilities in Westerly and Pawcatuck.

Pawtuxet - valley, the valley of the Pawtuxet River between Washington, in Coventry and Pontiac, in Warwick, Kent County.
Pawtucket is on the Seekonk River and the Blackstone River, at the point where coming from the sea and Narragansett Bay -- the tidal river from the sea (known as Seekonk River) comes to a falls and thereafter upward the river is called the Blackstone river.
Originally part of different political units, the two units, on the opposite sides of the river, were united as a single entity with one governing body in 1874, when the Town of Pawtucket, Rhode Island was established with the boundaries as we know them today.

The western boundary was to be the Pawcatuck river to its head, and thence due north to the Massachusetts line.
Originally the eastern boundary of Connecticut (see that state) was to have been the Narragansett river or bay; but this charter stipulated, with the consent of the Connecticut agents, that the Pawcatuck river should be "taken and deemed to be" the Narragansett river mentioned in the Connecticut boundary.
Connecticut repudiated the action of her agent, claimed jurisdiction over the Narragansett country, east of the Pawcatuck, both by her charter and by conquest from the Indians, and pressed her claim by all legal means, by appeal to the New England union, and by preparations for force.

While Pawcatuck had several mills on its banks, Westerly is known for it's granite.

An Atlantic white-sided dolphin that swam up the Pawcatuck River on Thursday died overnight, despite intensive treatment from specialists at the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration.
The wayward dolphin, which was taken to the aquarium Thursday night when it became entangled in brush in the river near Westerly, R.I., was sicker than first thought and did not survive through the night, an aquarium spokesman said Friday.
He said it was unusual for an Atlantic white-sided dolphin to travel alone up a river from the ocean, as the animals typically live in large groups.

Stewart explained that nitrates from the sewage treatment facilities have fueled the growth of algae, both macro-algae, and micro-cellular algae, which is the algae that blooms in the spring and covers the top of the surface.
Stewart said that the river used to be full of oysters and scallops, before the algae robbed the river of viable oyster bedding, morphing the sand and rock into mud and silt.
Murphy said although the plan to lease the river property to Denison is not set in stone, he is optimistic that Stewart will begin growing the oysters in the river this spring.
