Pawel Adamowicz has repeatedly declared that the city authorities do not intend to strip the Nobel prize laureate of his honorary Gdansk citizenship, though the issue is still to be officially decided on by the City Council.
Speaking for Polish Radio, mayor Adamowicz quoted a just conducted opinion poll on the matter among the city’s residents.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ Gdansk is planning a museum on the origins of Poland's dissident movement, to be housed at the bankrupt shipyard where Solidarity was born.
City council chairman Pawel Adamowicz, the originator of the idea, was quoted by PAP news agency as saying the Baltic port hopes to open the Polish Road to Freedom Museum by 2000, the 20th anniversary of the Solidarity trade union.
The museum is to feature Solidarity banners, flags and posters, as well as bats and firebombs the group used against the communist militia during riots.
