Nebraska is bordered by South Dakota to the north; Iowa and Missouri to the east, across the Missouri River; Kansas to the south; Colorado to the southwest; and Wyoming to the west.
A past Nebraska tourism slogan was "Where the West Begins"; locations given for the beginning of the "West" include the Missouri River, the intersection of 13th and O Streets in Lincoln (where it is marked by a red brick star), the 100th meridian, and Chimney Rock.
According to the Census Bureau, as of 2004, the population of Nebraska was 1,747,214.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 21.00% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 27.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county is $29,000, and the median income for a family is $36,326.

At one time the Pawnee lived in what is now Texas, but by 1541, when Coronado visited Quivira, they seem to have been settled in the valley of the Platte River in S Nebraska.
The Pawnee were hostile to the Sioux and the Cheyenne, although friendly toward the Oto.
Pawnee population was reduced by wars with the Sioux and by the smallpox and cholera epidemics of the 1830s and 1840s.

From Nebraska City they went directly to Brownville where they got from the land office a plot of all government lands in Pawnee county, then went to the home of a former Jo Daviess county neighbor, Almon S. Davis, on the Richardson-Pawnee county line where they stayed during a three days blizzard.
That fall father says in his memories, "Countless myriads of locusts descended upon Nebraska from the northwest and eggs hatched and the young locusts did some damage to growing crops until they got their wings, when they left." This was before the great grasshopper invasions of the Seventies.
Although it was not included in the subjected suggested by the Pawnee County Historical Society, I wish to add a little about the amusements at Bunker Hill.
