Pay grade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the United States Military, a Pay Grade is a system denoting rate and indicates the rate at which a member receives basic pay.
A servicemember's basic pay is determined strictly by pay grade and the amount of time they have been in the military (known as time in service).
Pay Grade is essential when determining a member's entitlements such as basic pay, BAH, or to determine seniority among a group of members from different services.

 Pay Adjustments - Job Changes
When the employee's current pay rate (prior to promotion) is within the new pay grade's mid-range, the employee should receive a 5 to 7 percent increase.
When the employee's current pay rate (prior to promotion) is within the new pay grade's upper range, the employee should receive a 3 percent increase.
If pay increases are budgeted, raises are granted with the approval of each employee's supervisor, and employees with documented satisfactory performance will normally receive pay increases effective with the start of the fiscal year.

Grade retention allows an employee to retain for 2 years, for pay and benefits purposes, the grade of the position from which he/she was reduced when an employee is placed in a lower grade as a result of reduction-in-force procedures, a reclassification process, or a reorganization.
An employee's eligibility for mandatory or optional grade retention, as appropriate, is determined by application of the criteria contained in 5.10A or 5.10B.
Grade retention under the optional provisions is generally appropriate when such action will assist management in achieving its objectives and/or when the reduction in grade will have a positive effect on another employee during a reduction-in-force.

Past pay studies have proposed a time-in-grade pay table but critics have prevailed, arguing that a time-in-grade pay table can be perceived as inequitable.
