Intercontinental Peace Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Intercontinental Peace Bridge is a proposed/envisioned bridge spanning the Bering Strait between Cape Dezhnev, Siberia, Russia, and Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska.
Although the longest bridge of the three could be in excess of 40 km (25 miles) — compare to the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, comprised of two segments of 23.86 and 23.87 miles each — such a bridge would provide an overland connection linking Asia, Africa and Europe with North America and South America.
International bridges and tunnels have in Europe been paid by loans and road fees only, since there is a political principle that international travel should not be paid by tax payers.

The Peace Bridge (42°54′25″N, 78°54′20″W) is an arch bridge that consists of five arched spans over the Niagara River and a Parker through-truss which spans the Black Rock Canal on the American side of the river.
On June 1, 1927 the bridge was opened to the public although the official ceremony was held on August 7, 1927.
The Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority in 1997 announced plans for the building of a twin second bridge to be situated to the north of and beside the existing Peace Bridge.

Bridge of Peace...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Bridge of Peace is a remarkable new social technology that enables individuals to participate in a meaningful series of steps that result in the creation of a partnership dedicated to and actively working for peace.
Peace, on the other hand, is the natural consequence of congruence at this fundamental level of intent, awareness, thought and action.
The WFWP uses the Bridge of Peace to tend to some of the most obvious needs for reconciliation: racial reconciliation; the healing of wounds between peoples of nations that have fought one another in wars; between people of different cultures; and also as a way to uplift one of the most rewarding and challenging relationships-marriage.

 Bridges Over Niagara Falls
The bridge had a span of 825 feet (251.4m), and was supported by four wire cables of ten-inch diameter each and had two decks: the lower deck was devoted to vehicles and the upper deck was devoted to the railway traffic.
Built by Samuel Keeffer, this bridge was of the suspension type with a timber deck and with stiffening truss and timber towers supporting the cables at each end of the bridge.
In 1900, the superstructure of the bridge was redesigned.

 Bridges For Peace
It is very powerful to see people stretched across a bridge, from one end to the other, but is is also powerful to be that one to stand alone, supported by those doing the same further up the road, in the next town or the next state.
Bridges for Peace has supported the past International Days of protest; On January 15 and February 15, 2003, over 1200 people stood against war on very cold bridges throughout Maine and in Maryland and New York City while buses carried friends to the demonstrations in those and other major cities.
In October of that year another call to Bridges for Peace went out to support protests in Washington DC, and in March 2004 we gathered to mark the first anniversary of the war.

 S. Asia quake damages 'Peace Bridge' - Boston.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The newly reopened "Peace Bridge" linking the Indian and Pakistani portions of disputed Kashmir nearly collapsed during the South Asia earthquake, a blow to a symbol of the recent thawing of decades of tensions, officials said Sunday.
The white-colored metal bridge underwent repairs this year to fix damage sustained in the 1947-48 war between the two neighbors shortly after the new nation of Pakistan was carved out of the former British India.
Closed since that war, the reopened bridge became an icon of the advances in recent peace initiatives by India and Pakistan that have significantly reduced tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals, which have fought three wars, including two over Kashmir.

The fallacy crippling the Peace Bridge expansion project: "old" does not equal "historically significant"
It is more and more apparent that the people controlling the Peace Bridge expansion project are passionately committed to erecting a companion span—a bridge that keeps the old bridge company rather than one that replaces it entirely.
Surely such restoration would interest the SHPA officials in Albany at least as much as preservation of the Peace Bridge's Parker Truss, which exists only by bureaucratic fiat of the Coast Guard and is a functional anachronism and a design disaster.
The Peace Bridge is not a standalone object.

That the bridge needed help was beyond debate: traffic had increased by 50 percent since 1990 and was projected to surpass the span's capacity by 2002.
To the members of the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, the binational group that built the border crossing in 1927 and still runs it, the solution was simple: build a three-lane updated companion to the original, doubling the capacity of the roadway.
And his bridge could be open by 2002, he claimed, with twice as many lanes as the companion span.

The authority that operates the bridge has proposed construction of a parallel span that nearly duplicates-but would not replace-the existing Peace Bridge, which was built in 1927 and spans the Niagara River, connecting Buffalo with Ft. Erie, Ontario.
