	Peace Tower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		It replaced the 55-metre Victoria Tower, burned in the 1916 Parliament Hill fire; the current tower is 92.2 metres tall.
		Similar to the bell tower at Westminster and the U.S. Capitol dome lantern, the lantern in the Peace Tower is illuminated when Parliament is in session.
		Until the early 1970s, the Peace Tower dominated the Ottawa skyline as a strict 150 ft (45.7 meters) height limit was placed on other buildings; that was rescinded and it is no longer the tallest structure.

		Mark di Suvero and Rirkrit Tiravanija have assembled more than 180 artists in the creation of a Peace Tower, rising outside the museum’s entrance with its base planted in the Sculpture Court.
		The tower is the re-creation of a project, the “Artists’ Tower Against the War in Vietnam,” first constructed in 1966 in Los Angeles by the Artists’ Protest Committee.
		The structure for the first Peace Tower, based on an idea from participating artist Irving Petlin, was designed by sculptor Mark di Suvero, and erected at the intersection of Sunset and La Cienega Boulevards.

		The parliament is housed in a complex on Parliament Hill, a very scenic location on the banks of the Ottawa River in downtown Ottawa, in a Gothic Revival suite of buildings.
		The Centre Block burned in 1916; the edifice was entirely destroyed except for the Library of Parliament, whose treasures were preserved by a quick-thinking librarian who was able to close its massive doors.
		The Centre Block was immediately rebuilt, being completed in 1920, with the Peace Tower, commemorating the end of the First World War, being completed in 1927.

		Situated at the western end of Hart House and standing 143 feet tall, the Soldiers' Tower is a world-renowned memorial to the 624 members of the University of Toronto who gave their lives while on active service in 1914-1918 and to the 557 men and women lost from 1939 to 1945.
		The Soldiers' Tower Committee of the University of Toronto Alumni Association, in conjunction with the university, administers and funds various aspects of Soldiers' Tower.

		The idea was to celebrate the original Peace Tower built in 1966 by Mark di Suvero as a protest against the Vietnam War.
		This was followed by some of the veterans of the original peace tower in LA reminiscing about it, 60s radicals who'd been hounded by the security services for their political activities (one brandished his FBI file, full of hilarious references to "young men of unkempt appearance demonstrating against the war in art galleries").
		These are the values of the 1960s Peace Tower veterans, but they're also values I can see in the blogs of young Japanese -- Rinko Kawauchi's photojournal, for instance.

		A Peace Tower will be unveiled in Sennaya Square during next year's galas to mark the foundation tricentenary of St. Petersburg.
