  Manuel de Godoy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manuel de Godoy y Álvarez de Faria, Duke of Alcudia, Duke of Sueca, Marquis of Alvarez, and Lord of Soto de Roma (May 12, 1767 – October 7, 1851), was Prime Minister of Spain from 1792 to 1797 and from 1801 to 1808.
During his lifetime he received the title Prince of Peace or of the Peace (Príncipe de la Paz) for the Peace of Basel, and he was widely known under that name.
In July 1795 Godoy negotiated the Peace of Basel by which Spain's frontier was restored but part of the island of Hispaniola was handed over to the French.

The Treaty of Basel was a turning point in the centuries of conflict between the Swiss communities in the valleys of the Alps and the Habsburgs, the dominant family in the region.
Basel, a wealthy city and one of the nurseries of European capitalism, joined the Swiss confederation in 1501 and the independence of the Swiss states was soon to be taken for granted.
He returned to Basel in October to resume a heavy teaching load, but as early as 1871 ill health prompted him to seek relief from the stultifying chores of a professor of classical philology; he applied for the vacant chair of philosophy and proposed Rohde as his successor, all to no avail.

The Portuguese refused to comply, and the Spanish marched into the Alentejo in May. After two weeks of fighting, the "War of the Oranges," as it is known, was concluded in 1801 at Badajoz.
According to the terms of the peace treaty, Portugal agreed to close its ports to British shipping, granted commercial concessions to the French, paid an indemnity, and ceded Olivença to Spain.

The Prussian army had been engaged in a somewhat fruitless but expensive campaign in Holland in 1787, and was not especially distinguished against the French; and in 1795, suspicious of the motives of Austria and Russia, Prussia made a seperate peace (of Basel) which virtually split Germany into two camps.
Frederick William III (1770-1840) succeeded his father as king in 1797, and though he tried to remedy the worst aspects of his father's regime by lifting some of the more repressive laws, he lacked the decisiveness required.
The crushing defeats of Jena and Auerstadt demonstrated the decline of the Prussian army and national resolve; Frederick William III lost half his kingdom by the 'Peace of Tilsit', including all the acquisitions from the 2nd and 3rd partitions of Poland and all land west of the Elbe.
