Kearney was working in Wicklow at the time he composed the lyrics (1907) and he was teaching Irish at night, among his students was author and playwright Seán Ó Casey.
Peadar Kearney was arrested and interned in 1920 and was released upon the signing of the Treaty in 1921.
Peadar Kearney's sister Kathleen was the mother of Brendan Behan or 'Mother of all the Behans' as her autobiography is entitled.

In the Easter Rising of 1916 Kearney fought at Jacob’s biscuit factory under Thomas MacDonagh.
He died in relative poverty in 1942, and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
Other well known songs by Kearney include Down by the Glenside (The Bold Fenian Men), The Three-coloured Ribbon, Down by the Liffey Side and Erin Go Bragh (Erin Go Bragh was the text on the Irish national flag before the adoption of the tricolour).

I wrote this song based loosely on the Salve Regina, the prayer which is recited at the end of the Rosary.
Also known as The Bold Fenian Men, written by Peadar Kearney, who wrote the Irish National Anthem and is on uncle of Brendan Behan.
I composed the music to this beautiful poem by Scotland's bard and then found out that a lot of other people have done the same.

The first draft of the national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann, is going under the hammer in what has been billed as the most significant auction in Irish history.
Penned by Peadar Kearney in 1907, The Soldier's Song, is expected to attract bids of up to €1.2m.
Today's auction at James Adam and Sons and Mealy's Auctioneers is being held at St Stephen's Green and will continue until this evening.

There is also a series of twenty-two pieces of correspondence from Brian Higgins to Martin Green of McGibbon and Kee publishing company.
