  Hubbert's Peak, Current Events
Damage to oil supply facilities can be done cheaply, compared to the impact of the damage.
If high international oil "prices are insane," then oil producing countries would reserve their own production for domestic use.
However, a truism about oil – dating from 1955 – states that most of the rewards come from the giant oilfields.

Hubbert peak theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hubbert's peak theory is subject to continued discussion because of the potential effects of lowered oil production, and because of the ongoing debate over aspects of energy policy.
After the peak, but before an oil field is empty, another significant point is reached when it takes more energy to recover, transport and process a barrel of oil than the amount of energy contained in that barrel.
Alternatives to oil are energy sources other than oil which can be used instead of oil and natural gas in one or more applications, including; as a prime energy source, as a transportation fuel and as an ingredient in plastics and pesticides.

Peak Oil was low on the radar in 1999, but Y2Kers had sensitive antenna—many would say too sensitive—and Peak Oil fit right in with their paranoia (only they preferred to call it sensible caution) about interdependence, sustainability, and complex systems.
Peak Oil simply meant that oil resources on the planet were finite and that there would come a point in time when one day less oil would be extracted than on the previous day.
Peak Oil could affect the planetary infrastructure, impacting transportation, communication, and the shipment of goods, something Y2K folks are already well familiar with and for which they have long lists of preparations for Things That Could Go Wrong.

Peak Oil is real and imminent; worldwide oil production is unlikely to ever exceed 85 million barrels per day by a significant amount.
Peak Oil might not represent a big near-term (this year) opportunity, so for fund managers who are evaluated on a quarterly basis and compensated on an annual basis, it is not an investment-worthy thesis.
Peak Oil is not broadly considered by Wall Street and is not incorporated into the economic projections that in turn are used to build financial models for particular companies.  As a result, Peak Oil is textually and numerically invisible in the financial community.

Finally, he combined his results with estimated forecasts for new field developments from sources such as the deep ocean and oil sands in Canada, but he says that these are unlikely to offset the upcoming declines from the giant fields—and there is little chance that new giant fields will be discovered in the future.
In Canada’s oil sands, for instance, the oil is so heavy that it must be heated up before it starts to flow, he said, and this is a slow and expensive process.

With the cost of oil at or near record territory and gasoline prices hovering around $3 a gallon, the government is advocating new measures to sooth growing public concern over rising prices at the pumps.
These are temporary fixes, analysts say, for an oil shortage which, like the 1973 oil crisis, is triggered more by politics and economics than a natural paucity of global reserves or an inability to extract and produce new oil.
Also, the peaks were followed by sharp declines in oil production that did not gently slope or flatten out as some forecasters have predicted.
