PearPC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PearPC is an architecture-independent PowerPC platform emulator capable of running most PowerPC operating systems, such as Mac OS X, Darwin and Linux.
PearPC is currently in development and is advancing quickly in speed, stability and features.
The news raised a lot of questions about the future of the PearPC project, because although the project itself is a PowerPC emulator, it is used primarily to run Mac OS X on x86 machines.

PearPC is a program that runs Mac OS X on a Linux or Windows PC.
The PearPC project had its origins in early 2002 when Sebastian Biallas of Aachen, Germany, ported a PowerPC disassembler to HT (a multiarchitecture disassembler, code analyzer, and hex editor).
The extent of PearPC's emulation of the PowerPC processor is demonstrated in its ability to run OS X, as shown in Figure 1 (click the image to expand it).

While PearPC has to emulate not only the CPU but also the hardware of a Mac, SoftPear can concentrate on the CPU emulation and a compatibility layer.
Additionally PearPC emulates the CPU absolutely accurate (or at least and good as possible..) suitable for running complete operating systems, while SoftPear is targeted on running user-space programs.
PearPC itself was developed independently by me, without Apple's intellectual property and can even run other OSs instead of Mac OS X (in fact most of the development was and still is done with a Linux distribution as client OS).

PearPC will increase speeds in subsequent releases; but for now, PearPC just gives Windows users a taste of OS X. The kernel of OS X, Darwin (which is BSD based) is open source and runs on an X86 box.
The main challenges the PearPC team has ahead of them are: coping with the lack of registers, emulating Altivec, and getting some form of graphics acceleration working.
PearPC currently does all of these effects in software, so if it can pass the instructions through to the graphics card, speed would be enhanced greatly.

I believe the use of this program in itself does not violate Apple’s copyright laws, but as soon as OS X is installed the EULA is violated.
So the PearPC user base is legally only allowed to use it with OpenDarwin, or other PPC distros of Linux or Unix.

If your intention is to run PearPC on a dedicated box, you would want only the minimal underpinnings required for its operation (and nLite proveds a great way to work towards this goal).
