Pearl (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pearl is an album by Janis Joplin, released in January 1971 just four months after her death from a heroin overdose.
The album has a more polished feel than the albums she recorded with Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Kozmic Blues Band thanks to the expertise of producer Paul L. Rothschild and her new backing musicians.
Additonally, the Full Tilt Boogie Band were the musicians who accompanied her on the famous Festival Express in during the summer of 1970, and many of the songs on this album were introduced on the concert stage in Canada.

Pearl Jam's career has followed a definite progression, and in retrospect Vs. is a clear stepping stone between the polished and beautiful Ten and the manic depressive Vitalogy.
I think after three albums and a near nervous break down as a band, Pearl Jam finally realized that the only way they were going to keep it together was to take their sound wherever they wanted it to go and let the fans follow rather than just keep cranking out angst ridden rock tunes.
Pearl Jam’s little song tags are really cool to listen to in concert, and it’s nice that people who may not have seen them in concert aren’t totally missing out.

 Pearl Jam Album Reviews
But the album’s true hero is singer Eddie Vedder, a previously unknown former gas station attendant whose impassioned vocal performances and phenomenal voice would make him a reluctant superstar and give these good songs the edge to truly make them great.
Pearl Jam are still a really good band, a point that is immediately apparent on "Can't Keep," a groovy rocker with a big beat and exotic Middle Eastern overtones.
However, Pearl Jam does what they do very well, and even the obligatory filler-ish songs, of which there are several on the album's second half, are generally interesting.

All in all, this album to me was much heavier and had a greater variety of great songs than any of their previous three albums(which are all great in themselves).
That's not to say the album doesn't have its harder sometimes punk rocking moments like with 'Grievance' or 'Breakerfall' but on the whole the album is reflective and impacts on the senses in an undescribable fashion.
Many probably forget (non-fans who happen to own this album can be excused from this) that the Pearl Jam always look for a new direction every album and really this album, with its unique style, is one they had to make - fans especially must remember that this band have experimentation at their core.

The Guide -- Pearl Jam Releases Seventh Studio Album
Most of the album could be played in a sparsely populated bar just as easily as it could in a packed stadium.
The album falls into a bit of a lull in the middle, with the slightly tired-sounding “Thumbing My Way” and “You Are,” both of which sound faintly like Bob Dylan or Neil Young cuts.
Another particularly admirable accomplishment is that all band members seem to contribute equally to the album, not only in the writing of the music and lyrics, but also in the performances.

Pearl Jam - Binaural | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, articles, and news ...
Their latest release, Binaural, is their sixth studio album and is typical of a rock band that has reached a plateau of greatness, it being musically sound and lyrically intelligent.
The variety of Pearl Jam's first collection of new tracks for two years is further reflected in the opening blitzkrieg of "Breakerfall," the radio-friendly "Light Years" and the experimental "Insignificance." Another to watch out for is "Nothing As It Seems," the album's first single takes its time to infect the lobes with beautiful dirge-like vocals.
In true rock style, Pearl Jam are linking the launch of the album to a full world tour that started in Lisbon and will reach our shores (the UK) in late May and early June.

The latest repackaging of the album comes in the shape of Pearl: Legacy Edition, and although it doesn’t restore completely the pertinence of the original effort, it does offer a terrific and focused overview of her final moments on Earth.
Also featured on Pearl: Legacy Edition is an acoustic-driven, demo rendition of Me and Bobby McGee and five additional selections that were plucked from the studio sessions, though none of it is nearly as sterling as the concert cuts.
It’s almost too much to consider what Joplin might have accomplished had she not accidentally overdosed while in the midst of creating Pearl, but the terrifying blend of beauty and misery that she left as her epitaph is as much of a legacy as anyone should need.

By the time Pearl, Janis Joplin’s second solo album, reached No. 1 in Billboard in February 1971, the singer from Port Arthur, TX by way of San Francisco had been gone for nearly five months, dead of a heroin overdose at age 27.
Grieving rock fans ultimately made Pearl the most successful album of Joplin’s career — it topped the chart for nine weeks, one more than Cheap Thrills, the 1968 breakthrough with her first band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, had spent in that position.
Nine of the 19 bonus tracks that flesh out the original album are previously unreleased; the entirety of the second disc is constructed from live shows that took place in Canada between June 28 and July 4, 1970 as part of the now legendary Festival Express tour.

VEGAS MUST DIE does the same, and shows a nice pattern of growth, which might surprise those who are most familiar with him via the slew of Cleopatra tribute albums on which he appeared.
Pearl utilizes some interesting enjambment in his delivery, as well.
I disagree with some of the mix choices, especially where Pearl's vocal is occasionally submerged under what sounds like flash for the sheer sake of show-offery, but for a disc written on five pounds of coffee in a 3-week period, I'd have to say it's easily best of show!

After years as a sideman for Texas blues musicians and a session man for Los Angeleno jazz-pop musicians, guitarist Cal Green had the opportunity to record a second solo album, but his first rooted solidly in the blues, in 1988.
Fortunately, the resulting record, White Pearl, is closer to his Texas roots than the jazz-pop aspirations of his late '60s album Trippin'.
There are still some slick surfaces scattered throughout the album, but almost all of the record is nothing but the blues, giving Green chance to flaunt his chops.
