Pearl Harbor (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pearl Harbor is the title of a war film released in the summer of 2001 by Touchstone Pictures.
It was a dramatic re-imagining of the attack on Pearl Harbor and was produced by the team of Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay, who had previously been involved with such summer blockbusters as Armageddon and The Rock.
Pearl Harbor was released Memorial Day weekend in 2001 and was released on DVD to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the attack.

Pearl Harbor finished number two to the all-time record for movie openings on a three-day weekend, and netted over $75 million dollars towards its $135 million dollar cost.
Though the movie Pearl Harbor is meant for entertainment, it has a serious side, wherein the events of December 7, 1941, are the historical backdrop that shape the lives of its characters.
Unlike the movie, the actual attack on Pearl Harbor was not an entertaining "roller coaster ride" for the people who lived it, nor for the people who died there, and certainly not for all of those who were left behind.

Pearl Harbor is a Titanic wannabe that falls far short of the mark.
Pearl Harbor depicts all of this (and more - the third act is an account of Dolittle's April 1942 bombing raid on Tokyo, launched from the Hornet), but does so in a slapdash fashion.
Pearl Harbor is designed as a crowd-pleaser, and, as is too often the case with that sort of a motion picture, it values good looking sets, attractive performers, and flashy special effects over an intelligent screenplay.

Pearl Harbor - a Movie Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
Since the audience knows what awaits on Dec. 7, the importance of the movie's first half (like Titanic, Pearl Harbor clocks in at three hours) is to give us heroes to root for once the carnage is unleashed.
Director Michael Bay, whose movies Armageddon and The Rock have been infamous for their rapid-style editing, is a little more measured here, at least until the climactic battle scenes.
The movie even has the audacity to assert that the Doolittle raid was the turning point in the war, as if the breaking of the Japanese encryption codes and the resulting victory at Midway had no effect.

Pearl Harbor Movie Review on AudioRevolution.com
The fact is that there’s plenty of room between those two poles and indeed, "Pearl Harbor" lands almost dead center.
For the history-impaired who don’t grasp the immediate implications of the title, "Pearl Harbor" concerns the surprise bombing attack on the U.S. Navy fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941, which resulted in enormous loss of life – and the subsequent entry of the U.S. into WWII.
"Pearl Harbor" has some truly impressive moments in its depiction of catastrophe and combat (and one or two truly silly bits in the course of the love stories) and it’s a respectable effort.

 Pearl Harbor (2001)
In the midst of the Japanese raid of Pearl Harbor, two best friends, both pilots, discover that they are in love with the same woman.
Pearl Harbor's "money scene," however, outdoes the big-ship movie; instead of a luxury liner slowly sinking for 20 minutes, we see a dozen battleships blown to bits for three-quarters of an hour.
Saving Private Ryan may have captured the visceral horror of hand-to-hand combat, but the climax of Pearl Harbor perfectly captures the terror of those unlucky enough to be on the receiving end of an aerial attack.

Pearl Harbor was overall a good movie, however it wasn't everything I expected it to be.
Pearl Harbor was a very emotional movie, and I thought it told well of personal relationships, the pain of loss and of physical suffering for the sake of freedom.

And the remaining 50 minutes bring us back to settle the love story, as the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack is dealt with and General Dolittle (Alec Baldwin) puts into effect the 1942 raid on Tokyo.
In "Pearl Harbor," the love triangle that arises does not garner the same potency, due to the flawed screenplay, and the fact that the outcome of the relationship has literally nothing to do with what happened at Pearl Harbor.
The centerpiece of "Pearl Harbor" is, of course, the Japanese invasion, and it does not disappoint.

Salon.com Arts & Entertainment | "Pearl Harbor": Bombs away!
The heroism of "Pearl Harbor" is unsullied by anything as mundane as patriotism -- it's hard to figure out if Bay and screenwriter Randall Wallace ("Braveheart," "The Man in the Iron Mask") think flag-waving is uncool or in bad taste or both.
Wallace's narrative uses the bombing of Pearl Harbor as a backdrop for the story of the deep and lasting friendship between Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett), who have been buddies since they were little squirts.
The rest of the movie meshes the story of the two guys and the gal, who eventually reunite at Pearl Harbor, with the unfolding of the Japanese plot to blow the whole thing to smithereens.

 Pearl Harbor: Cinephiles Movie Review
Pearl Harbor, directed by Michael Bay (The Rock, Armageddon), produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and written by Randall Wallace, recreates the events surrounding the infamous attack by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 against the Pacific fleet stationed in Pearl Harbor.
Pearl Harbor focuses closely on the devastation produced by the surprise attack, and creates within the historical setting a fictional story about two daring young pilots and a committed navy nurse.
In this manner, Pearl Harbor safely avoids exposing the more controversial real-life issues, such as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's strongly suspected knowledge of the pending Japanese attack, and of his possible decision to withhold that knowledge in order to prompt Congress to allow the U.S. to react to the attack and enter the war.

The raid on Pearl Harbor took the U.S. Pacific Fleet by surprise, but back in Washington, the Roosevelt administration was fully aware of the coming onslaught.
The admiral had sound reasons: Pearl Harbor was vulnerable to attack, being approachable from any direction; it could not be effectively rigged with nets and baffles to defend against torpedo planes; and in Hawaii it would be hard to supply and train crews for his undermanned vessels.
Pearl Harbor also lacked adequate fuel supplies and dry docks, and keeping men far from their families would create morale problems.

Factual error: In the first view of Pearl Harbor, just before the nurses are shown in the small transport boat as they arrive at Pearl, you clearly see the Arizona Memorial in the background as the camera pans down from sky to harbour.
Visible crew/equipment: During the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the people are jumping off the ships, you can briefly see a crew member (dressed as a sailor) holding a camera (covered in green plastic) floating next to him in the water.
Continuity: In the scene where President Roosevelt is sitting at the table talking to the joint chiefs etc., the camera pans around the table and as it passes General Marshall, it shows what appears to be a Vietnam service ribbon in the cluster on his chest.

Radio Free Movie Review: Pearl Harbor (2001)
Pearl Harbor, which began its advertising campaign over a year ago, has been one of the most anticipated movies of 2001.
The whole situation is filled with so many soap opera theatrics that you may spend the whole movie waiting for the arrival of the evil twin or the revelation that FDR is Ben Affleck's father.
But according to Pearl Harbor (and the generally accepted rules of sappy romantic dramas), you skip that step and go right to the jealousy between the parties involved.

Pearl Harbor by Hans Zimmer @ Cinemusic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
This may be indicative of the film it's written for, as Zimmer's score (at least on this short-ish album) is a bit of a drag, and not quite the emotional epic that THE THIN RED LINE is or the blitzkrieg that was GLADIATOR.
While this isn't a deplorable approach, PEARL HARBOR as a score will probably not live up to fan expectations, who might have hoped for at least one or two thrashing action cues.
With repeated listening I've come to appreciate PEARL HARBOR a little more each time (my initial listen was less than pleasing), but it's not the kind of album you'll reach for if you've got other listening options.
