  Tom Rapp by Mark Brend
Before recording under his own name, Tom Rapp was known as the leader of a studio-bound psychedelic underground folk group with a penchant for writing songs about big issues - war, space, love - and putting the poetry of Shakespeare and Auden to music.
ESP wrote back saying that the Pearls Before Swine demo, despite being so badly pressed as to be virtually inaudible, was probably the sort of thing they were looking for.
Pearls Before Swine's status as psychedelic mavericks was confirmed by their decision to use a reproduction of the then obscure Hieronymus Bosch painting, The Garden Of Earthly Delights, on the front cover of their debut.

A cultured pearl is produced by inserting a nucleus (or nuclei) together with a tiny speck (or specks) of mantle tissue into a three year old oyster.
The nucleated oysters are put into pearl rafts and returned to sheltered bays rich in natural nutrients, from which the oysters feed and grow, depositing lustrous layers of nacre around their nuclei.
Pearl technicians check the water temperature and feeding conditions daily at various water depths and move the rafts up and down to take advantage of the best growing conditions.

Neither Cast Ye Your Pearls Before Swine
There is a fitness and utility in exhibiting these pearls among those of like precious faith, but those who have never possessed them would rudely trample on them if cast before them, as swine would trample upon the most costly and precious jewels.
Sheep, swine and dogs are not suitable companions for each other, they cannot live in good communion together, nor should unnatural amalgamation be attempted, but let the sheep be associated with sheep, and let them "beware of dogs," and avoid the society of swine, and they will be more pleasantly and comfortably situated.
Let us then heed the admonition of our Lord, and give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast our pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend us.

Pearls Before Swine was an American psychedelic folk band formed by Tom Rapp in 1965 in Eau Gallie, now part of Melbourne, Florida.
Many of the other songs of this period reflected Rapp's interests in mysticism, his relationship with his father, and his experiences of living for a time in (and marrying a native of) Holland.
In 1971 Pearls Before Swine toured for the first time, the group then comprising Rapp, Mike Krawitz (piano), Gordon Hayes (bass) and Jon Tooker (guitar).
