 A short history of soap
Soap is perhaps the first manufactured substance with which we come into contact in our lives and it remains a daily necessity thereafter.
While soap was in use during the Roman period its adoption may have been slow, despite the popularity of public and private baths throughout the empire.
Traditional soap manufacturing methods involved the boiling of oils and fats with caustic solution in open pans of a capacity anywhere between 10 and 150 tons, followed by the addition of salt or brine in the "salting out" process, in which the soap separated from the lye.

Andrew Pears arrived in London in 1789 from his native Cornish village of Mevagissey, where he had trained as a barber.
It was a combination which was to represent Pears' public image for many years to come, and continues today with the tradition of each young Miss Pears (the winner of an annual competition) having her portrait painted by a recognized artist.
Pears advertising, to suit its brand image, was tasteful and restrained, needing no recourse to the hyperbolics often encountered elsewhere in the period we are considering.

 Soap Advertising
Other soap brands (for example, Fiske's Japanese soap) also exploited the idea of a Japanese culture of personal hygiene, and Pears Soap (a British brand) and Hand Sapolio used Japanese characters or motifs to clarify that they, too, were worthy of being used by the Japanese.
Pears also used in 1900 a picture of the globe of the earth with a little Japanese and an American girl reaching over to hand off bars of Pears Soap to each other (the Japanese girl is leaning across Russia, which is striking given the growing hostility between these two countries).
Pears in fact sometimes exploited sexual themes or innuendo ("He won't be happy till he gets it"--a bar of soap or a kiss) and a famous early ad shows Lillian Russell naked in a bubble bath.
