If the value of the test statistic is such that it very likely was drawn from a population where the variables were not related, then the null hypothesis is accepted; otherwise the null hypothesis is rejected and the researcher concludes that the research hypothesis is supported.
The key assumptions in hypothesis testing is that the data consistute a random sample of observations from a population of concern.
Test for Indepence of Samples, which test to see if there is any relationship between two categorial varibles based on their marginal distributions.

 GLOSSARY
A two-tailed test is a statistical test of significance in which the critical area (the area of rejection) is at both ends (tails) of the distribution.
An upper-tailed test is one in which the rejection region (for rejecting the null hypothesis) is at the upper tail or right hand end of the distribution.
A statistical test in which the total area to the left of some point in the probability distribution provides the relevant probability is called a lower-tailed test.

Pearson's method uses the actual, individual values of X and Y and can be used with samples or the population.
Pearson's coefficient of correlation is only associated with linear correlation and continuous data.
According to the table of critical values for Pearson's r, the minimum value of r is 0.7646, with a df of 8 (n (2 = 10 (2 = 8 pairs of data), at the 0.01 level.

Pearsons Chi-Square Test on the relevant contingency table was used to test whether the two attributes, N and location (M and AM) were independent variables and a p-value = 0.05 was considered significant.
The Pearson Chi-Square test showed that the lymph node involvement and the location (M versus AM) were not statistically independent (p-value=0.014): M located tumours were associated with higher number (43/101 = 42.5%) of metastatic lymph nodes (N1 and N2), whereas AM tumours are associated with involved lymph nodes in only 5/37 (13.5%) tumours (Figure 4).
Statistical analyses were performed using the test for proportions (with continuity correction), the Pearson Chi-square test and generalised linear models; p<0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Parametric tests assume that the variables you are testing or comparing are distributed in a particular way, typically normally distributed.
The primary advantage of parametric testing is that you get slightly more statistical power to detect differences, but not much.
In many cases, parametric and nonparametric tests will give the same answer regarding statistical significance.
