Pearson Plc, publisher of the Financial Times newspaper, hit its earnings goals on Monday but the advertising downturn mauled its flagship title and the British media group said there was no recovery in sight.
Pearson also beat its goal of 40 percent growth in earnings per share at 30.3 pence and the finance director said she was "pretty confident" the group would meet double-digit earnings growth this year too after missing its target in 2001.
Pearson also expects to be a "shade ahead" of growth of between five and seven percent in the college market in 2003.

NCS Pearson's revenues are on track to grow 15 percent for the year, topping $1 billion in annual sales for the first time in its history.
NCS Pearson's performance can be attributed to a number of factors, including growth in its government business, renewal of several state testing contracts and the launch of testing centers aimed at the professional certification and licensure market.

Pearson School Systems, a division of British media giant Pearson PLC, has agreed to buy Apple Computer's PowerSchool division, which makes a student information system (SIS) by the same name that enables parents, students, and teachers to monitor grades and homework assignments via the web.
Pearson also plans to develop educational content for teachers and students that is compatible with Apple's iPod and will be sold through Apple's iTunes online music store, the companies said.
Wendy Spiegel, director of communications for Pearson School Systems, said her company has been the leader in SIS software development since the technology "elevated out of a spreadsheet." The Pearson School Systems division of Pearson Education was formed after Pearson acquired SIS leader National Computer Systems (NCS) for $2.4 billion in 2000.
