Although Pechora are regular at least on both the south and west coasts at this time (and presumably on the east coast and inland too, though personal observations there at this time have been extremely limited), highest spot counts during this second period in e.g.
Pechora Pipit is often extremely skulking, usually found singly (preventing "direct comparison of plumage tones"), and even where common on migration, it tends not to form tight flocks, instead forming loose groups.
Early- and late-migrating Pechora Pipit seem to exhibit a range of differences from each other, which might be useful to consider in the separation of menzbieri and gustavi in field conditions.

This case relates to the sighting of a pipit inhabiting the shrubby vegetation of Ashmore Reef, WA on the 4th and 5th November 2001.
Generally, Pechora Pipit is more boldly marked on both the upperparts and underparts and importantly (Alstrom and Mild 1989) the tips of at least 3 of the primaries extend beyond the longest tertial.
Pechora Pipit is a long distance migrant wintering in the eastern parts of the Oriental Region, including Wallacea and has long been anticipated as a potential vagrant to Australia.

A very similar species, the Pechora Pipit, has not yet been recorded in the Pribilofs but has recently been shown to be regular in fall on Saint Lawrence.
On Pechora Pipit the primaries extend past the tertials, the wing bars and mantle stripes are typically bolder and the bill is more extensively pink based.
It should be noted that Tree Pipit has occurred in Alaska, this species lacks white mantle stripes and will show heavily streaks on the breast and upper flanks, sharply demarked from the fine streaks on the lower flanks.

Hong Kong Mystery Pipit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
I have been trying to identify one of the pipits that I photgraphed in Hong Kong on a recent trip, on Oct 19, 2002.
While I wouldn't have been sure enough of pipit ID to call it as a Red-throated from the photos (have "seen" sp.in Bulgaria; flyovers ID'd on call!), but it's DEFINITELY not a Richard's, which would only have a gorget of streaking across the upper breast, would be much more upright and have pale lores.
Steve Leonard - Malden, MA Having done a little browsing for photos of Richard's Pipit with some success, I suspect that the bird in the photos from Hong Kong is indeed that species.

Birds Korea - conserving birds and habitats in South Korea and the Yellow Sea eco-region
The bird was about the size of an Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni (several were present for direct comparison), and (1) heavily "tramlined" on the upperparts (ruling out Buff-bellied Pipit Anthus rubescens japonicus).
Additional features included that (9) the supercilium was sandy-buff and concolorous with the pale lines on the mantle; (10) the tertials were pale-fringed (Olive-backed Pipit typically shows greenish edges); and (11) the bold breast streaking became much finer down the flanks, again a feature not shared by Meadow Pipit.
Although these are the first Korean records of the Tree Pipit, it has recently begun to be recorded almost annually in Japan since the species was first found there in 1965 (Brazil 1991), presumably as observers have become more familiar with the identification criteria.

The Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii) is similar, with less streaking on the flanks, a whiter belly, and more pronounced mottling on the back.
Sprague's Pipits normally don't associate with flocks of American Pipits and prefer longer grass in winter where they are especially hard to see.
The Olive-backed Pipit (Anthus hodgsoni) and the Pechora Pipit (Anthus gustavi) are similar species from Asia that are sough-after rarities in the islands off Alaska.

Merlin, Ring Ouzel, Firecrest, Yellow-browed Warbler and Jack Snipe showed well both weeks whilst highlights of the second week were Richard's Pipit, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Rose-coloured Starling, a different Barred Warbler, the long-staying Ring-necked Duck and a hat-trick of buntings: Lapland, Ortolan and Snow.
Part of the enjoyment of Scilly is that difficult species on the mainland often show incredibly well here (see the Jack Snipe and Eurasian Siskin photographs).
There were the usual scares with possible Great Snipe, Pechora Pipit, Northern Waterthrush and Dusky Thrush, and the evenings in the Scillonian Club were very enjoyable with various tables, the log and several slide shows.

We’ll also spend two days on Old Peak, a wooded mountain north of Beidaihe where fabulous forests hold a number of species that we are unlikely to encounter on the coast such as Blunt-winged Warbler, Chinese Nuthatch, Gray-sided Thrush, Chinese Flycatcher and Chinese Leaf-Warbler.
Throughout the spring the wooded gardens and gullies of the town, the rocky outcrops and estuaries along the coastline, and the low-lying wooded hills a little way inland act as magnets to thousands of birds migrating north.
Even on quiet days there should be good numbers of migrants around, but it is the falls of grounded birds and the waves of passing migrants that make a visit to Beidaihe so memorable.

Along with many of the species that can be encountered during the first two months of the year a warm southerly will bring with it the first spring migrants.
However, Norfolk is blessed with a multitude of rare or localised breeding species and the summer month’s offer a great opportunity to catch up with them during the long warm days.
I just wonder how fruitful it would be to take in a deep breath and spend some time away from the rarity chasing in order to focus on a search for this species.
