American Masters . Gregory Peck | PBS
For many, Peck was a symbol of the American man at his best - a pillar of moral courage and a constant defender of traditional values.
It seems clear however, that the reason for Peck's constant assertion that TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is his best (and favorite) film, was the film's attention to the lives of children and the importance of family.
For Peck, life as a father and as a public figure have been inseparable-; he was simultaneously a major voice against the Vietnam war, while remaining a patriotic supporter of his son who was fighting there.

Peck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Scotland, the peck was used as a dry measure until the introduction of Imperial units as a result of the Weights and Measures Act 1824.
The peck was equal to about 9 litres (in the case of certain crops, such as wheat, peas, beans and meal) and about 13 litres (in the case of barley, oats and malt).
A firlot was equal to 4 pecks and the peck was equal to 4 lippies or forpets or 3 grudgies.

 Salon | M. Scott Peck
Peck defends such decisions squarely; he is no advocate of "heroic measures," and in the past few decades most other doctors have joined him -- pulling the plug is no longer unusual practice in most cases.
Peck doesn't take the intuitive (and hideous) Protestant position that dying is one more trial that God throws at you and you should show your toughness by dealing with it bravely.
Peck says that the stages of dying that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross identified in her book "On Death and Dying" (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) are the schema for any of these kinds of ego-death -- in individuals, in marriages, even in national traumas like Vietnam.

Southern Baptist Historical Library & Archives - John M. Peck   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Antimissioners were most vocal during the 1820's, but Peck successfully defended missions, noticing that the root of opposition lay in the ignorance, bigotry, and selfishness of preachers, such as Daniel Parker, who feared the loss of their influence.
Peck encouraged efforts to preserve Baptist history; in 1840 he became the first secretary of the Western Baptist Historical Society, and in 1853 he urged the creation of the American Baptist Historical Society, an adjunct of the American Baptist Publication Society.
Peck's last 12 years were less active, but his reputation, both among and beyond Baptists as a pioneer statesman grew.
