		In the early 1990s Peckham was a nexus of the underground music culture because of a large squat in the disused DHSS building near Peckham High Street.

		Before Peckham Library was completed, Alsop already had a reputation as something of a maverick in the British architectural scene: for many, the bizarre structure peeking over the rooftops in south London merely confirmed that here was an architect who was very difficult to categorise.
		The actual library element of the building (the top two floors) is deliberately raised above the hubbub below, allowing readers the opportunity for quiet reflection as they browse the books or admire the panoramic views of central London beyond.
		Peckham Library represents urban regeneration on a smaller scale than the Modernist housing schemes, which preceded it, and its Pop-Art appearance appears to place it outside the realms of the Modern Movement.

		The unprepared visitor to Peckham, wandering through this bustling corner of South London, may be taken aback to discover it has been invaded by what appears to be a large green boggle-eyed cartoon monster on seven insect-like legs.

		Sadly, when I arrived in Peckham to take these photos, a glorious sunny day had turned into a damp miserable one, so the pictures are not as bright and colourful as I would have liked.
		But Peckham Library is a really fantastic building.
		The main library rooms are at the top, in the widest section of the building, and benefit from natural light coming in through the roof and through windows in the panelled green sides and front section.

		Until recently, nearly all his big commissions were in Europe, with his most famous British effort being the £4.5million Peckham Library and Media Centre, which won the Stirling Prize in 2000.
		Peckham Library itself, green-tinged and with what looks like a giant tongue on its roof, sits incongruously in a run-down corner of London.
