Pedersen device - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pedersen device was an optional attachment for the Springfield 1903 rifle that allowed it to fire a short 0.30 (7.62mm) caliber pistol-sized cartridge in semi-automatic mode.
This wonder weapon was developed to allow infantry to dramatically increase their rate of fire while on the move during World War I, while also allowing the rifle to be used in conventional bolt action mode for long-range fire from the trenches.
John Pedersen, a long time employee of Remington Arms, was aware that the US would be entering the war at some point.

 springfield
This device was inserted into the modified M1903 action instead of the standard bolt, and featured a semi-automatic action with box magazine, that fired a specially-designed.30 caliber (7.62mm) straight-wall cartridges of relatively low power, allowing to every soldier equipped with modified M1903 to fire rapidly from the hip while advancing onto the enemy positions.
The device was fed from 40 rounds magazines, and required an ejection port to be cut in the left wall of the receiver.
The Pedersen device was later found ineffective and with numerous drawbacks, and in 1920s almost all "M1918 pistols" were scrapped and Mark 1 rifles converted to the standard pattern.

Pedersen did most of his experimental and developmental work while affiliated with the Remington Arms Co. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Pedersen developed a semi-automatic service rifle that was a serious competitor to the rifle designed by John Garand that was subsequently adopted as the M1.
Pedersen labored at his new invention until the summer of 1917 when he contacted the U.S. Army Ordnance Department to request a secret demonstration of the fruits of his labor.
The device was to be carried in a stamped, sheet metal scabbard, and the standard '03 bolt was to be contained in a canvas pouch when it was removed from the rifle.

 Pedersen device
The Pedersen Device was an optional attachment for the Springfield 1903 rifle that allowed it to shoot a small 7mm pistol-sized round in semi-automatic mode.
It was developed to allow infantry to dramatically increase their rate of fire while on the move during World War I, while also allowing the rifle to be used in conventional bolt action mode for long-range fire from the trenches.
This led him to the final design of his Device, which replaced the bolt of the standard Springfield with a longish device consisiting of a complete firing mechanism and a small "barrel" for the small round.

To this end, John Pedersen was requested to develop a version of his device for use with the M1917 rifle since it was being produced in much larger numbers than the M1903.
Although the Pedersen Device’s “secret” status was maintained after the war, it eventually became apparent that the mechanism was never going to be utilized by the U.S. Army.
The precise number of Pedersen Devices extant is not known and estimates range from a few dozen to perhaps 100, and condition ranges from pristine examples to burnt-out relics.

 Pipsqueak Pistol That Never Was
Because it was necessary to mount the device into the receiver of the rifle itself, an ejection port had to be cut into the left side of the receiver and the sear mechanism of the ‘03 had to be modified to release the firing pin of the Device once the trigger was pulled.
The device itself was held into the action utilizing a specially designed Magazine Cut Off, and the sear of the Pedersen Device was triggered by a special “tripper sear” that replaced the normal sear of a standard M1903 Rifle.
In light of the new thrust of infantry tactics, the pipsqueak cartridge fired by the Pedersen Device would be of little use in a fluid Infantry environment, especially against aircraft or armored vehicles.

Developed in 1917 by Remington arms designer, J.D. Pedersen, the Pedersen device allowed for the conversion of the M1903 Springfield rifle into a semi-automatic rifle capable of firing 40 shots in seconds.
By removing the bolt, inserting the device and putting a magazine into a modified rifle designated as the Mark I, the Springfield could fire semi-automatically until the magazine was exhausted.

You could probably compare the Pedersen device to an auxiliary chamber that allows you to shoot a smaller cartridge with the same diameter bullet in a larger chamber.
The remainder of the device is the mechanism, which converts the rifle to a blowback-operated firing cycle.
One of the best recitations of the history of the device can be found in Hatcher's Notebook, for the general was one of the officers who -- in company with the designer, Pedersen -- demonstrated the highly secret device for Pershing and a small group of his staff.

Pedersen reported that he had what he considered to be a very important invention, which he wished to have reviewed in secret.

Work continued on this project through World War I. During the war, the Pedersen feed device for the Springfield '03 rifle was developed, allowing for semiautomatic fire with a special.30 caliber cartridge.
The downfall of this design was a violent action due to the opening of the bolt while the bullet was still in the barrel and under tremendous pressure.
