Topic: Pediatric surgery

Pediatric surgery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pediatric surgery (sometimes spelled paediatric surgery) is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
Pediatric surgeons have completed a general surgery residency (medicine), then complete two more years of subspecialty fellowship training before they are eligible to take the board examination for official subspecialty certification.
Pediatric surgery arose in the middle of the 20th century as the surgical care of birth defects required novel techniques and methods and became more commonly based at children's hospitals.

Association of Women Surgeons - CDR: Pediatric Surgery
Pediatric surgeons feel that a thorough background of training in general surgery is required to be able to serve the pediatric patient well and so the requirement for completed training in general surgery through the chief residency is presently mandated.
This is not necessarily in a pediatric setting nor is the research necessarily directly related to pediatric surgery; however, some advantage exists to be in the laboratory of a pediatric surgeon.
Since the residents become board qualified in general surgery as a rule they are mature, experienced operators and therefore most of the programs will allow a great deal of independence for the residents during their two years.
