In the News (Thu 31 Dec 09)

NARGS: Plant of the Month: December 2002
Pedicularis, Castilleja, and some other genera in the family are quite different from the commonly grown genera as they are root parasites, technically "hemiparasites", plants who have chlorophyll and can produce sugars, but who do not have fully functional root systems.
Some recent DNA evidence indicates that Pedicularis and Castilleja might better be placed in the Orobanchaceae, the broom rape family, whose other members do not produce chlorophyll, i.e.
Pedicularis kanei is one of the major features of the alpine areas of Flattop Mountain near Anchorage, Alaska where the photograph was taken.

Pedicularis furbishiae is a narrow endemic, found only along 225 km of the pristine St. John River system of Maine and adjacent New Brunswick.
Pedicularis furbishiae grows mainly on north- or northwest-facing, narrow strips of steeply sloping river banks, usually associated with groundwater seeps in relatively circumneutral, gravelly soil left by glaciers (USFWS 1991, Maine Department of Conservation 1999, COSEWIC 2001).
Systematic ecological surveys have revealed that Pedicularis furbishiae is associated with riverbank areas that have typically suffered ice scour within the past 3 to 10 years, and are steeper, wetter, and characterized by high species richness relative to areas not supporting the taxon (Gawler 1988, Menges 1990).

One Arctic Pedicularis has been used as food, and the powdered leaves of an Oriental species are reported to be used to induce elimination of blood from the respiratory tract.
Canada lousewort is a member of the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae) which derives its name from the supposed cure of scrophula and figwarts attributed to members of this group by the early herbalists.
Pedicularis is from the Latin pediculus "a louse" because of the early European belief that cattle, feeding where lousewort abounded, became covered with lice.

Pedicularis hirsuta allocates most resources to reproduction and has the highest P/O-ratio and relative reproductive success (RRS) in the area, thus being the most successful species of the four regarding seed production.
Pedicularis lanata has the lowest relative reproductive success of the three sexually reproducing species due to low seed set.
The four species possess flowers adapted for insect pollination, but are using different and alternative means to maintain populations: vegetative propagation, autogamy, visits by unspecialized insects, and by being perennial.

Flora of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago - Pedicularis L.
The potential for hybridization between Pedicularis species by reason of overlapping blooming periods, sharing of the same or adjacent habitats, and recovery of individually marked pollinators was noted.
A comparison of lengths of nectariferous tubes of corollas, lengths of tongues (prementum plus glossa) of pollinators, behaviour of pollinators, and diversity of species of pollinators on each species of Pedicularis indicated that adaptive behaviour of pollinators was related to the length of tongues of pollinators.
It is suggested that interactions between floral mechanisms and pollinating insects probably contributed substantially to the present diversity of floral form in species of Pedicularis in North America.

The Plan (Service 1991) states that until further data on the long- term population dynamics of Pedicularis furbishiae are available, a delisting objective is pending.
According to the Plan, P. furbishiae could be reclassified from endangered to threatened when a reproducing population and its habitat are protected and maintained along the St. John River.
We have found no evidence or data in our files or in the petition that indicates a data error was committed in listing Pedicularis furbishiae or that otherwise indicates the petitioned action may be warranted.

Yunnan is an excellent place to study the diversification of Pedicularis, because approximately 25% of the species in this large genus are present there and it seems quite likely to me that the region surrounding the Hengduan and East Himalaya Mountains of Yunnan is the center of diversity for Pedicularis.
Additionally, the species in Yunnan have all of the major corolla types present in Pedicularis, including toothless (24 spp.), toothed (24 spp.), short-tubed and beaked (87 spp.), and long-tubed and beaked (16 spp.).
Floral characteristics among species of Pedicularis are closely associated with the behavior of their respective pollinators.
