The Gruiformes (Cranes and their relatives)
However it is likely they may also have been carrion eaters.
The family Pedionomidae contains only one species, Pedionomus torquatus the Plains Wanderer.
The Plains Wanderer, sometimes referred to as the Collared Hemipode because of its superficial resemblance to the Hemipode or Button Quails is a small bird (16 cm or 6.25 ins long) found only in the open grasslands of Australian.

Rick told us many interesting things about this bird and I think we were all found some surprising.
First, it is the only bird in the family, Pedionomidae wordwide and it’s closest relative is the snipe.
Then comes the reverse roles, the female is the larger and more colourful bird.

Most interestingly, is that the Pedionomidae (plains-wanderers) of Australia have been re-classified as charadriiform birds (Olson and Steadman 1981) after classically being considered gruiform birds.

REMARKS ON A WORLD-WIDE INVENTORY OF AVIAN ANATOMICAL SPECIMENS
Based on the inventories we have received, skeletons are apparently lacking only for the Oxyruncidae, Neodrepanidinae, and Hypoco- liinae, and spirit specimens for Atrichornithi- dae.
Total numbers of specimens and species in the 36 largest skeleton collections for which inventories were received by 1 June 1982.
Apparently only 1-5 spirit specimens exist for the Casuariidae, Anseranatinae, Pedionomidae, Aramidae, Ibid- orhynchidae, Strigopinae, Phodilinae, Lepto- somatidae, Oxyruncidae, Neodrepanidinae, Hypocoliinae, Tichodromadinae, Salporni- thinae, and Cnemophilinae.

Some desert frogs undergo aestivation (in the first sense), but I can't think of any Australian birds that do.
Let's see: casuariidae, megapodiidae, phasianidae, anseranatidae, anatidae, podicipedidae, spheniscidae - all no. None of the tube-noses, none of the pelecaniformes, ardeidae, threskiornithidae, ciconiidae, accipitridae, falconidae, gruidae, rallidae, otididae, turnicidae, pedionomidae - all no. None of the waders, terns or gulls, no pigeon, no parrots, cockatoos or cuckoos.
I doubt that they mean owls, owlet nightjars or nightjars (although you never know, but I'm pretty sure none of ours exhibit signs of torpor).

Alas, there was a guard there on our final visit who prevented me from carrying my camera, but I did draw this field sketch (below right) later that day (and have washed it with a tiny bit of color in PhotoShop).
Of all the bird families in the world, perhaps the hardest to add to one's life experience are the rockfowl in Africa [two species in the Picathartidae], the Kagu [Rhynochetidae] of New Caledonia, and these monotypic families of the Old World: Shoebill [Balaenicipididae], Ibisbill [Ibidorhynchidae], Plains-Wanderer [Pedionomidae], Bornean Bristlehead [Pityriaseidae], and the Hypocolius.
One might argue that surely the cassowaries [Casuariidae] and scrub-birds [Atrichornithidae] of Australasia, the kiwis of New Zealand [Apterygidae], and the trumpeters [Psophiidae] and gnateaters [Conopophagidae] of the New World tropics are in the running.
