Topic: Pedosphere

  Halfbakery: Pedosphere
I just had to check and see if the idea originated on this site.
I thought the pedosphere was the layer of the earth's atmoshphere extending from ground level up to about 2 or 4 inches?
In a certain light, that name is hilarious; almost like a satire of what 'jock' archetypes think of noncompetitive sports.

  Chapter 1 Section 3
Life is found pervasively on the pedosphere (soil) surface, the land surface of the lithosphere, in the hydrosphere (oceans, lakes and rivers), extending down to various depths into the pedosphere and lithosphere, and up into the lower atmosphere.
The pedosphere is comprised of relatively thin soil layers found on top of much of Earth's land surface.
A number of processes operating on a variety of time scales occur in the pedosphere: heat, water, gas, and energy transfers, biological activities, weathering and erosion, compaction, salinization, biogeochemical cycling, organic matter decomposition and humus formation, and soil genesis.

Soil :: The Earth : Gourt
Soil is the complex body on the surface of a lithosphere subject to soil formation processes, comprised by mineral and organic matter, as well as living organisms.
Soil, comprising the pedosphere, is earthy material that has been affected by pedogenesis.
The pedosphere is positioned at the interface of the lithosphere with the biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere.

The collaborators are holders of major international pedosphere data sets, such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC), as well as national soils institutes, individual soil scientists, and users of soil data.
The immediate goal was to supply pedosphere information to global change researchers, but the unification and distribution of the existing soils data bases is of great benefit to all researchers, not only those directly involved in global change studies.
The task was enabled by the active participation of the principal international custodians of pedosphere data.

 Soil
While the general concept of soil is well established, the definition of soil varies, according to the perspective of the discipline or occupation using soil as a resource.
Soil occupies the pedosphere, one of Earth's spheres that the geosciences use to conceptually organise the Earth.
This is the conceptual perspective of pedology and edaphology, the two main branches of soil science.

 Population Explosion and Soil Erosion
The five sub-systems that Earth system scientists look at include the lithosphere (the crust of the Earth), the pedosphere (the broken down rock and organic matter that becomes soil), the hydrosphere (water), the biosphere (living and nonliving matter) and the atmosphere (includes the hydrosphere, pedosphere, biosphere).
The pedosphere takes in all of the decomposed organic matter and broken down rock that covers all of the land surface of the Earth.
The pedosphere, which we depend on for our food, our outdoor recreation, our daily life, is a delicate living and non-living sub-system of the larger Earth system.

 IUSS - Divisions and Commissions
Division 1 is the "What." It looks at the soil as a body and how it was formed, the extent of it global coverage, and the many complex interactions and interactions with the biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere.
It includes the scaling of soil morphology from micro to macro levels of generalization, calibration of morphology to pedogenic processes, and integration of this pedosphere knowledge with that of the biosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere.
Using a morphogenic bias, it is possible to catalogue and classify the population of soil attributes and generate multiple-use interpretations with spatial or tabular representations using GIS, and other state-of-the-science technologies.

 EPILOG
Having reviewed chemistry and having examined the chemical characteristics of the major segments of our environment ?lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere and biosphere, it is crucial to learn the chemical interactions among those segments or cycles.
Between and among major cycles, there are many interactions: hydrosphere-lithosphere, atmosphere?hydrosphere, biosphere–lithosphere, biosphere–atmosphere, biosphere–hydrosphere, lithosphere –pedosphere, lithosphere-hydrosphere–biosphere, etc. that end up with the interaction among all five cycles.
Mankind’s aspect of the biosphere still remains a central target for various pollutants to attack, whether they are transported through atmosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, lithosphere, or a combination of major spheres.

In the hydrosphere, carbon is present as bicarbonate (HCO3-1) and carbonate (CO3-2) the major factor in the hardness of water.
In the biosphere, carbon is present as the building block of the plants and animals in the form of variety of carbon compounds such as carbohydrates, proteins and amino-acids.

The pedosphere consists of the disaggregated and decomposed (weathered) rock from the lithosphere and decayed material from the biosphere.
The pedosphere is produced by the action of water, oxygen, acids and organic matter acting on the lithosphere.
In the tropics where rainfall and temperature are high and topography flat, weathering is rapid and erosion is slow.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY: CHEMISTRY OF MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL CYCLES
Environmental science, which builds on the foundation of chemistry, seeks to remedy the present deterioration and degradation caused by humans, and to create new technology that will prevent further damage.
This book deals comprehensively with the five essential global cycles or environspheres — lithosphere (minerals and energy sources), atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), pedosphere (soil), and biosphere (life) — and provides a clear overview of the crucial interaction away them.
It covers the chemistry of energy resources and aspects of biochemistry, geochemistry, and toxicological chemistry, in addition to the three important areas of air, water, and soil; in the process, it links chemical principles with environmental issues.
